This article describes the case of a 17 year old high school girl who was brought to the emergency unit of a Korean hospital by her parents. She was diagnosed as suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder (DSM-III-R), her chief symptom being shifts of personality involving identification with seven people. The shifts of personality were reported to take place by losing consciousness for 5-10 seconds, and the new personality that emerged persisted from a few minutes to several hours. The Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) manifested itself after a chain of several shocking events. The first was a serious motorcycle accident involving a close childhood friend. This was followed by a severe beating of the patient by her parents when she came home very late one night. Then she was sexually assaulted by her close friend. The clinical record of the patient's life history notes that she was beaten severely by her mother when she was young. Her mother was described as very authoritarian. She was an obedient child and a model student, never rebelling against the authority of parents or teacher. The change in the patient's personality allowed her to express her suppressed feelings against her mother and act violently. On the thirteenth day in hospital when she was exhibiting intense dissociative symptoms Disorder, the EEG revealed abnormal activity in both hemispheres. She was treated with carbamazepine 800 mg and fluoxetine 60 mg and resumed her normal personality with amnesia at Karolinska Institutets Universitetsbibliotek on May 24, 2015 tps.sagepub.com Downloaded from
The Aesthetic Function of the Minangkabau Long HouseThe Minangkabau long house reincarnates the essence of Minangkabau social organisation, invoking the concept of the " house " proposed by Lévi-Strauss (1979, 1984, 1985). The significance of the Minangkabau long house lies not just in its architectural symbolism, but also in the social life thattakes place in it. We propose to get an insight to the man/woman relationship in this society through the analysis of the Minangkabau long house - the dialectics of the aesthetical object and the process of its production in ceremonial life
