This paper focused on causes and dangers of academic procrastination (a behavioural problem that involves delaying a task which needs to be accomplished) in mathematics and the need for counseling students who are procrastinators especially of mathematics. Thus, in order to have a comprehensive understanding of the topic, the meaning, causes and its debilitating effects on student's mathematics achievement were discussed after which the counsellor's role in helping students get out of this behavioural problem in order to ensure a sustainable educational system were discussed.
Various studies have reported a huge increase in the numbers of orphaned adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa and its effects on their psychological, emotional and behavioural development. Yet, their needs are seldom recognised or adequately addressed in policy and programmes.This article uses a qualitative study to report the experiences of 11 orphaned adolescents (5 boys and 6 girls aged between 15 and 18 years) affected by HIV and AIDS in a secondary school (in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, South Africa) and the school support provided by them. The primary data-generation strategies were informal interviews and the Beck Youth Inventories-II (BYI-II) (adopted to measure the participants' level of emotional, behavioural and psychological problems). All interview transcriptions with the participants were thematically analysed. BYI-II data were subjected to T scores (in percentages) to know the participant's psychological, behavioural and emotional problems in order to compare it with their perceptions on the degree of support provided by the school. Result shows that participants have a high prevalence of psychological, behavioural and emotional problems and that the school support provided to them (teachers' support, the general school environment and the degree of discrimination, labelling and bullying that exists in the school) was not sufficient. The participants, however, reported a high level of support from the principal. In conclusion, we have suggested the urgent need for teachers to acquire and possess basic knowledge and skills in caring and paying attention to learners affected by HIV and AIDS and for government agencies and NGOs working with HIV-and AIDS-affected children, to focus on proposals that address the psychological, behavioural and emotional problems in such affected adolescents.
The study investigated the joint and relative contributions of four predicting variables in predicting academic performance among secondary school students. The research design was descriptive survey while the study made use of 200 SS2 students chosen purposively from five secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode Local Government area of Ogun State, Nigeria. The two different instruments used for data collection were the accommodator cognitive style questionnaire and converger cognitive style questionnaire (ACSQ and CCSQ). Data were analysed using multiple regression. The results indicated an F value of 4.34 at a significant level of 0.05 which indicated that the four predictors could be used to predict the academic performance of students. Beta coefficients value for converger, accommodator, gender and area of specialisation were .014, .028, -045, and .279 respectively. The study has implications for teachers, students, counselors, school authorities, parents and the government.
Mathematics has become an important and compulsory school subject in many countries of the world but it has been recognized by many researchers as causing panic and fear for many students and this has often made most of such students to fail the subject. This study therefore sought the effect of gender on the mathematics anxiety of senior secondary school students in Ogun West Senatorial District. The sample size for this study were 270 senior secondary school students 2 (SS2) who were selected through stratified random sampling technique. The Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale-revised (MARS-R) was the only instrument used for the study. The data collected were analysed through Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and t-test. Results revealed a significant difference effect of gender on students’ mathematics anxiety. The study also revealed higher mathematics anxiety scores for male students than the female. The researcher recommended that counselors should use this study as a theoretical and empirical basis to help counselors see the need to help male students focus more on the subject so as to avoid being anxious. Schools should also sponsor seminars/workshops especially for male students on the importance of mathematics for career progression.
