Introduction. Clinical staging is the most important time in management of glottic cancer in early stage (I-II). We have conducted a prospective study to evaluate if magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is more accurate than computed tomography (CT) about tumoral extension, to exactly choose the most appropriate surgical approach, from organ preservation surgery to demolitive surgery. Materials and Methods. This prospective study was conducted on 26 male patients, with suspected laryngeal neoplasia of glottic region. The images of MRI and CT were analyzed to define the expansion of glottic lesion to anterior commissure, laryngeal cartilages, subglottic and/or supraglottic site, and paraglottic space. The results of MRI and CT were compared with each other and with the pathology report. Results. CT accuracy was 70% with low sensitivity but with high specific value. MRI showed a diagnostic accuracy in 80% of cases, with a sensitivity of 100% and high specificity. Statistical analysis showed that MRI has higher correlation than CT with the pathology report. Conclusion. Our study showed that MRI is more sensitive than CT in the preoperative staging of early glottic cancer, to select exactly the eligible patients in conservative surgery of the larynx, as supracricoid laryngectomy and cordectomy by CO2 laser.
Adult intussusception (AI) is uncommon condition that represents 1-5 % of intestinal obstruction and is frequently caused by an underlying disease with 70-90% of cases having a demonstrable cause based on imaging findings and surgical results. The most common causes of colonic AI are neoplasm. We report a case of right colo-colic intussusception sustained by a malignant tumor.
Uterine leiomyomas are common, benign, smooth muscle tumors of the uterus, occurring in 20-30% of women over age 35. A giant uterine leiomyoma is a tumor whose weight exceeds the arbitrary limit of approximately 11.4 kg (25 lb). Commonly multiple, leiomyomas can be described submucosal, intramural, subserosal. Large leiomyomas can cause various types of degeneration. The interest of the case lies in the difficulty of placing a differential diagnosis for the morphological characteristics of the large mass, due to non-characteristic aspect to the US and the MDCT. So MRI allowed to establish the relationship of the tumor with the uterus through the recognition of the vascular peduncle that connects the leiomyoma with fundus of the uterus. The application of MRI in the large pelvic masses goes beyond lesion detection, allowing in this case the typing, which is confirmed by the surgical findings.
The development of second generation ultrasound (US) contrast-medium and specific imaging techniques with dedicated softwares, allows to observe the liver perfusion in real time, becoming an useful and less invasive method to describe precisely the vascularization of hepatic lesions. This significantly increased the ability of US to detect and characterize focal liver lesions. The aim of this review article is to evaluate the role of contrast enhancement US in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic liver, with reference to the guidelines of American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, European Association for the Study of the Liver and European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.
