The first purpose of this study was to develop a scale of work–life balance for Turkish working women and men. The second purpose was to investigate the mediating effect of work–life balance between work–family conflict, family–work conflict, and life satisfaction. In Study 1 ( N = 274), a work–life balance scale was developed and initial validity evidence was presented. In Study 2 ( N = 356), confirmatory factor analyses supported the scale’s unidimensionality. Cronbach’s alpha and the composite reliability for internal consistency were .92. All studies indicated that the Work–Life Balance Scale was valid and reliable for a Turkish employee sample. Structural equation modeling supported indirect effects of work–family conflict and family–work conflict on life satisfaction via work–life balance. Multi-group analysis showed that the structural paths of the full model did not differ by gender.
Psychological counseling skills are the most important part of the psychological counseling profession. Psychological counseling candidates have the opportunity of performing these professional skills previously learned theoretically within the practice course of psychological counseling with another person during their undergraduate education and they receive supervision support for these practices. This study presents mixed-pattern research examining the effect of group supervision on the psychological counseling self-efficacy of psychological counselor candidates. Quantitative data were obtained from Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scale and qualitative data was obtained from the evaluation reports of the psychological counselor candidates. The quantitative findings show that group supervision is effective on all the subscales (exploration, insight, action, conflicts in relationships and client problems) of psychological counseling self-efficacy. The qualitative results backing up these findings prove that the responses of the participants can be divided into four categories of emotions, professional development, boosters, and difficulties. As a result, the findings of this research showed that the group supervision carried out in the individual psychological counseling course positively affected the psychological counseling self-efficacy perceptions of the psychological counselor candidates. Based on these findings, it has been suggested to take into consideration the improvement of the self-efficacy levels of psychological counselor candidates as well as the acquision of professional skills in counselor education.
The current study was designed to examine the mediating role of perceived social support between friendship quality and psychological well-being. There were 529 participants in the study (309 girls and 220 boys), adolescents who are in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades of six state high schools from the city of Uşak, Turkey. Their ages were between 14 and 19. These participants were assessed using the Friendship Qualities Scale and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques were used for assessing the mediation model. The results showed that a social support-family fully mediated the relationship between the quality of companionship-friendship, the quality of conflict-friendship, and psychological well-being; a social support-special person fully mediated the relationship between companionship and psychological well-being; and social support-friends fully mediated the relationship between security (friendship quality subscale) and psychological well-being.
There are various factors influencing learning and academic achievement of individuals. These may be external factors which do not arise from the individual, or affective factors which are closely related with the individual. In this study, affective factors such as anxiety, self-efficacy, and learned helplessness which influence learning performance of prospective teachers in mathematics were investigated with respect to their various characteristics, the mediating effect of self-efficacy in the relationship between mathematics anxiety and learned helplessness was examined. A quantitative pattern was employed in the study and it was found that there were significant differences between prospective teachers from different departments in terms of mathematics anxiety, perceived selfefficacy, and learned helplessness, there was a positive and significant correlation between anxiety and learned helplessness, which had a negative and significant correlation with self-efficacy and anxiety, whereas perceived mathematics self-efficacy had a full mediating effect in the relationship between mathematics anxiety and learned helplessness.
The Body Appreciation Scale (BAS) was developed by Avalos, Tylka & Wood-Barcalow (2005) to determine body appreciation. The present study examined the factor structure of the BAS among Turkish women and men university students. For this purpose, confirmatory factor analysis (competing model analysis) was conducted to evaluate the factor structure the BAS. Results from the confirmatory factor analysis on 741 university student (431 women; 310 men) suggested that a two-factor model with four items deleted represents an adequate description of the data, and best of the factor model proposed. In terms of convergent validity of the scale a negative and significant correlation was found between body appreciation and social appearance anxiety for women and men samples. The Turkish version of the BAS demonstrated adequate internal consistency and composite reliability. Finally, findings from t-test analysis showed that the BAS scores did not differ according to gender.
