Purpose Inspired by the theory of planned behavior, the purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the big five personality (BFP) traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) on four aspects of individuals’ knowledge management (KM) behaviors: knowledge acquisition, knowledge storage, knowledge sharing, and knowledge application. Design/methodology/approach A survey-based approach was used to collect data from 221 employees from five knowledge-intensive firms. Findings The partial least square analyses confirmed a positive effect of two personality traits, openness and conscientiousness, on knowledge acquisition as well as knowledge application behavior. In addition, the positive effects of extraversion and conscientiousness traits on knowledge storage behavior were confirmed. The findings also revealed that agreeableness and openness traits positively relate to knowledge sharing behavior. Finally, neuroticism had a negative effect on knowledge acquisition and application behavior. Practical implications This study suggests that organizations need to incorporate employees’ personality into the design and implementation of their KM systems. The findings provide managers with insight into the course of personnel selection and retention to facilitate KM behaviors in organizations. Originality/value Little is known about the relationship between the BFP traits and four aspects of KM behaviors at the individual level. The present study has contributed to the existing body of literature through clarifying how personality traits relate to four dimensions of individuals’ KM behaviors.
This study employs structural equation modelling technique to examine the direct effect of perceived external corporate social responsibility and perceived internal corporate social responsibility on employee engagement as well as the mediated link through organizational identification. Social exchange theory and social identity theory used to explain the relationships between the variables in this study. It was conducted among 1080 employees of four selected organizations in Iran which are among the main pioneers in performing corporate social activities. The test of research model shows the positive effect of perceived external corporate social responsibility and perceived internal corporate social responsibility on employee engagement. In addition, it confirms that organizational identification has a mediating role in above relationships. The results have also contributed to a better understanding of corporate social responsibility in Iran as a developing country in which corporate social responsibility has recently gained attention and thus there is still a lack of understanding about it. The findings would be useful for managers to have a better insight towards applying corporate social responsibility in line with increasing employees' identification and engagement.
The opening is necessary, but not sufficient, it helps provide remedial opportunities for developing countries by providing the means for poor countries to get out of underdevelopment, but on the other hand it makes them incur costs and risks. Our study conducted for the case of Tunisia showed that the opening will increase inequality, if it is not accompanied by control policies against disparities. This paper shows that the Atkinson index evolves in the same sense as the unemployment rate and the share of exports in Gross Domestic Product. Whereas, research and development expenditures, investment and human capital negatively act against rising inequality. Therefore, we will have to question about the nature of the opening that allows developing countries to take advantage of opportunities with minimum costs. So in order to be relevant, the opening must be prudent, diversified, solid and reciprocal.
Purpose Recent research highlights the necessity to critically examine the factors that can reduce the relationship between job stressors, such as job demand and burnout, to create healthier workplaces. This study aims to explore how five types of motivations (extrinsic motivation-social, extrinsic motivation- material, introjected, identified and intrinsic motivation), in combination with extraversion trait influence the impact of job demands on job burnout. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a set-theoretic approach named fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to analyze the data collected from 84 employees working in an research and development department of a public organization. Findings Findings revealed two distinct configurations. First, the absence of intrinsic and identified motivations lead to job burnout if extraverted participants suffer from high job demands. Second, non-extraverted participants reported high job burnout in the presence of high job demands, although all five types of motivations drove them. Practical implications This study suggests managers need to consider personalized preventive actions, depending on the level of extraversion trait when they try to motivate their employees who are dealing with high levels of job demands. Originality/value The emerging trend in social science suggests adopting linearity assumptions to study social phenomena is inconsistent with the reality of human behavior. Thus, this study used fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to examine the complex interplay among all five types of motivations, extraversion trait, job demands, which contribute to burnout.
Internet usage for non-work activities during work hours is an increasingly common concern among management scholars and practitioners as well as for employees, particularly in relation to its impact on work-life conflict and individual well-being. Drawing on memory for goals theory, this study investigates the distinction between digital intrusions and digital interruptions during work and their concomitant impact on work-life conflict. Using a set-theoretic approach to analyse data gathered from information technology (IT) professionals in Germany and Australia, we explain how a 2 * 2 matrix comprising non-work online messaging, or personal digital communication, during work and intrusion contributes to work-life conflict. A key finding is that employees reported work-life conflict only if they perceived private messaging as a source of intrusion rather than as a distraction. From a practical perspective, this finding suggests that employers may provide employees with micro-breaks to attend to perceived intrusions and thus reduce sources of work-life conflict. Contributions and suggestions for future studies are discussed.
