This study assessed the training needs poultry farmers in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The objectives were to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of the poultry farmers, examine the perceived training needs of the poultry farmers, ascertain the sources of information to poultry farmers, determine the sources of assistance to poultry farmers and identify the constraints to the training of poultry farmers. A quota sampling technique was used to select 84 respondents. The study results revealed that the mean age of the respondents was 33years and more of the respondents were male. More of the respondents were married and had an average household of 6 persons. The respondents were educated up to the secondary education level with a mean farming experience of 8 years and extension visits were annual. This study unveiled that respondents lacked competence among others in feed formulation (85.7%) and medication provision (76.2%). The majority of the poultry farmers possess a high level of awareness from cooperative society (75%) as the highest source of information while few of them possess low-level awareness from extension workers (47.6%). Self-help (mean = 3.26) was the highest source of assistance to the poultry farmers. The constraints such as inadequate farming fund (mean = 3.19), inadequate training provision (mean = 3.10) and inadequate input support (mean = 3.08) were considered to be the most serious. It was recommended that extension workers should be ready to make themselves available to farmers monthly.
Appropriate adoption techniques in aquaculture contribute to food security. The study appraised the functionality of aquacultural techniques in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria using adoption approaches. The objectives were to ascertain the level of adoption management techniques, examine the pond types of adoption, assess fish farmers' technological needs and identify constraints affecting adoption. A quota sampling technique was used to select respondents to acquire a sample size of 82 who were administered with questionnaire to elicit information. Data obtained were analyzed statistically. Results revealed that respondents were male (83%) with mean age of 44 years, mean household size 5 persons, married (65%) and had mean farming experience of 7 years. Majority (92%) had annual extension visit. Majority (78%) adopted earthen pond management techniques with high adoption score = 5.4. Again, majority (88%) adopted earthen pond over plastic (79%), concrete (71%) and wooden pond (59%). Majority (90.2%) indicated that integrated techniques were their prioritized need and respondents (80.5%) pointed out that high feed cost was their most serious constraint (mean = 3.06). It was concluded that there was a high adoption rate of aquacultural techniques in the study area. It is recommended that extension visits should be monthly and training on integrated techniques, feed formulation among others is needed.
The study assessed the fish farmers' livelihood in Camp 74 community, Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State. The study focused on the farmer's socioeconomic profile, contribution of fish farming to fish farmers' livelihood status, challenges of fish farming and strategies employed by fish farmers in tackling challenges. By purposive sampling, a sample size of 50 respondents was used for the study. A well structure questionnaire was used in conducting the research. The data collected were subjected to frequency distribution, linear Regression and Chi-square. The results showed that more respondent (74%) had social benefit from fish farming, youth respondents (62%) are engaged in fish farming as source of livelihood. Respondents (68%) attested that fish farming reduced hunger and increased fish availability all year round with better income generation and savings. It was revealed that the various contributions of selected livelihood components had a pooled mean = 1.67. Again, with the index value = 0.56, it implies a very high impact contribution of aquaculture to livelihood pattern. However, challenges to fish farming were among others high cost of fingerlings (mean = 3.54), weak government support (mean = 3.22) and non-visitation of extension workers (mean = 3.06). Respondents most important strategies to overcome challenges were assessed to improved varieties of fingerlings (mean = 3.42) and inclusion cooperative society in feed supply (mean = 3.12). The regression and chi-square results were significant (p<0.05). Based on these findings, it is recommended that government should participate more in fish farming activities to improve livelihoods.
This study was designed to examine the effects of the Delta-Songhai agricultural programs on beneficiaries in Delta State. Some objectives of the study were to: ascertain the type of training, determine the income generation level of the participants, measure the level of empowerment, and measure the level of satisfaction. A sample size of 72 was used in the study. This was obtained from random sampling using a multistage procedure. Results obtained were that male respondents (62.5%) dominated more than female with a mean age of 32 years. Respondents' average farming experience was five years. Respondents (97.2%) adopted poultry records skills, while respondents (94.5%) adopted aquaculture concrete pond techniques. Respondents were greatly empowered by the training program with a pooled mean of 2.89. Respondents' satisfaction level was high with a pooled mean of 2.89. Some constraints faced by the respondents were mostly, insufficient funds from the donor, poor project monitoring, and beneficiaries nonchalant behaviour after programme completion. Correlation result between poultry and aquaculture on income generation showed that poultry was more favourable than aquaculture. The study concluded that the training programme had a great impact on youth empowerment in poultry, aquaculture, piggery, and grass cutter production. It was recommended that these positive impacts should be sustained.
