This study investigates standard facilities and equipment as determinants of high sport performance of Cross River State at National sports festival. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design which includes the Causal-comparative (Ex-post-Facto) method of research. The study population consists of 344 sports personnel and athletes drawn from the sample made up of the state’s sports director and his deputy, coaches, organizers, sport commentators/writers and athletes adopting the multi-stage and stratified random sampling technique. The questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from 344 sports personnel and athletes, out of which 270 (78.5%) copies of the questionnaire were duly completed and returned. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentage and chi-square (x2) analysis tested at 0.05 level of significance with the aid of SPSS Version 21. The findings show that sports like athletics, tennis, table tennis, marathon, squash, and swimming have adequate facilities in the state. Sports like judo, boxing, wrestling and weight lifting have adequate facilities only at state headquarters while facilities for taekwondo, volleyball, cricket, badminton, handball, cycling, hockey and basketball are inadequate at both levels. The quality of equipment in Cross River State sports as reveal by the study was very low. Inadequate facilities in the state made significant influence on the performance of Cross River State. Also, inadequate equipment in the state made significant influence on the performance of Cross River State athletes both at National Sports Festivals.
This study investigates the influence of traditional variables on umbilical cord management among nursing mothers in Calabar Education Zone, Cross River State. Two research questions were answered in the study. The survey design was adopted for this study. The sample size of 748 nursing mothers that delivered within six months, currently obtaining postnatal health care services was drawn from a population of 1,068 nursing mothers in the area of study. “Traditional Variables and Umbilical Cord Management Questionnaire (CVUCMQ)” was used for data collection. Cronbach Alpha method was used to analyse the data with reliability estimates for the variable ranging from .81 to .88. The first finding indicates that traditional beliefs affect neonatal umbilical cord management by nursing mothers. The second finding of this study shows the influence of traditional practices on neonatal umbilical cord management by nursing mothers in Southern Cross River State. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the impact of traditional beliefs and practices are the strong traditional variables that nursing mothers and health care workers must pay due attention to ensure effective delivery of quality patient care. The study recommended among others that there should be forums to address traditional rulers and their cabinets on the dangers of unhealthy traditional beliefs and practices surrounding umbilical cord management.
The study investigated sports elementals and value-added factors in promotion of football in Cross River state, Nigeria. Survey research method of the ex-post-facto type was adopted for the study. The stratified random sampling technique was used to select 10% of football staff, board members of Cross River state football associations, organizing secretaries, coaches, assistant coaches and players of Cross River state for the study. Data collected were analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance and a post hoc analysis was further employed using Tukey Kramer multiple comparison test. The findings revealed that, funding has a significant relationship with the promotion of football (= 21.00; X SD = 2.04) and motivations of players has a significant relationship with the promotion of football in Cross River state (= 21.65; SD = 4.24). The study recommended that state government should provide funds to X support and promote football sports in the state, football coaches and football administrators should encourage players and gives them necessary motivation in terms of winning bonus, match bonus, goal scoring allowance, training allowance, medical welfare, etc.
This study investigates qualified coaches as a requisite for enhanced sports performance of Cross River State at National sports festival. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design of Expost-facto type. The study population consists of 344 sports personnel in the six (6) local government headquarters hosting the six zonal sports offices of the state adopting the total enumeration technique. The questionnaire was the main instrument used to elicit information from 344 sports personnel, out of which 270 (78.5%) copies of the questionnaire were duly completed and returned. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages and table with the aid of SPSS Version 21. The findings show that personnel have working experience, 65 accounting for 57% rated higher. Coaches had teacher"s Grade II Certificate, while some on the whole had professional certificate 2 and few were graduates. The study also revealed that two sports which are judo and wrestling have 1 -2 coaches each while there are 3 -4 Coaches each in badminton, basketball, tennis, squash, swimming and volleyball. Athletics, handball, soccer, and table tennis have more than 4 coaches while boxing, cricket, cycling, hockey, marathon taekwondo and weight lifting had no coach at all. The coach should have Psychological and communicative knowledge and ability, as an analyzer, a coach needs the appropriate analytical tool together with theoretical and real-life pattern of interpretation in order to initiate a formulation of the problem that is appropriate to the client"s particular issue and specify objective to bring about change. A coach should be able to reflect on both his analyses as well as his methods with regard to the underlying conception of humanity.
