This paper gives a detailed description of an experiment which studies the interactions of muon-type neutrinos in hydrogen and deuterium. The experiment was performed at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron using the wide-band neutrino beam incident on the Argonne 12-foot bubble chamber filled with hydrogen and deuterium. The neutrino energy spectrum peaks at 0.5 GeV and has a tail extending to 6 GeV. The shape and intensity of the flux is determined using measurements of pion yields from beryllium. The produced pions are focused by one or (for the latter part of the experiment) two magnetic horns. A total of 364000 pictures were taken with a hydrogen filling of the bubble chamber and 903000 with a deuterium filling. The scanning and other analyses of the events are described. The most abundant reaction occurs off neutrons and is quasi-elastic scattering vd +p-pp,. The separation of these events from background channels is discussed. The total and differentla] cross sections are analyzed to obtain the axial-vector form factor of the nucleon. Our result, expressed in terms of a dipole form factor, gives an axial-vector mass of 0.95 k 0 . 0 9 GeV. A comparison is made to previous measurements using neutrino beams, and also to determinations based upon threshold pion electroproduct~on experiments. In addition, the data are used to measure the weak vector form factor and so check the conserved-vector-current hypothesis.

We measured da/dt forp^+p^p+p fromPj_ 2 = 4.50 to 5.09 (GeV/c) 2 at 11.75 GeV/c. We used a 59%-polarized proton beam and a 71%-polarized proton target with both spins oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. In these large-Pj 2 hard-scattering events, spin effects are very large and the ratio (dcr/dt) ^%(da/dt) ^ grows rapidly with increasing P± 2 , reaching a value of 4 at 90° (cm.). Thus, hard elastic scattering, which is presumably due to the direct scattering of the protons' constituents, may only occur when the two incident protons' spins are parallel.Last fall 1 our group reported measurements of proton-proton elastic-scattering cross sections at 11.75 GeV/c in pure initial-spin states out to P x 2 = 4.2 (GeV/c) 2 . We found that the spin-spin force has a very dramatic rise starting at P ± 2 = 3.6 (GeV/c) 2 . This occurs just at the beginning of the large-P x 2 hard-scattering component of p-p elastic scattering, which was seen most clearly by De Kerret et at. at s = 2800 GeV 2 , 2 By P x 2 = 4.2 (GeV/c) 2 the ratio (da/dt) n :(da/dt) u had reached a value of almost 2 C While it appeared most likely that this large spin-spin force was associated directly with the large-Pj 2 , exp(-1.6Pj. 2 ), hard-elastic-scattering component, it was also possible that it was associated with the interference between the hard-scattering corncomponent and the medium-P x 2 , exp(-3P ± 2 ) com-ponent. We have now extended these measurements to the maximum P ± 2 possible at 11.75 GeV/c.We scattered an 11.75-GeV/c extracted polarized proton beam from our polarized proton target and measured the elastic event rate N u in each of the four initial-spin states.i, jsbeam, target = H, H f H 9 and W,Both spins were measured transverse to the horizontal scattering plane and the forward proton scattered to the left. We also measured the beam polarization, P B , and the target polarization, P r , using a high-energy polarimeter and an NMR system. The energy dependence of the spin-parallel and spin-antlparallel cross sections for p , + p , +p + p at 90" ,, was measured for beam momenta between 6 and 12.75 GeV/c. The ratio (da/dt),,,,,,,,:(du/dt),,,,,,,,,,, at 90" is about 1.2 up to 8 GeV/c and then increases rapidly to a value of almost 4 near 11 GeV/c. Our data indicate that this ratio may depend only on the variable P, 2, and suggests that the ratio may reach a limiting value of about 4 for large P , '.
