Knowledge Management (KM) systems were implemented widely in corporate organizations for past three decades, but there is little research on KM in schools. The key objectives of this study are to identify the major components of School Knowledge Management and analyze the impact of KM in secondary education on academic performance, based on the perception of school teachers. The survey-based study is conducted in government schools of an Indian State. Exploratory Factor Analysis and Binary Logistic Regression methods are used to identify the KM factors and their impact on academic performance. This study identified the processes and enablers of school KM and its impact on academic performance. Academic performance, being mentioned as the primary outcome of School KM has not been empirically tested from a School KM perspective earlier. Knowledge creation, technology infrastructure and teacher’s competency are identified as KM variables that can significantly influence the Academic Performance and therefore the schools can initiate policies and methods to improve these vital factors.
The software industry being highly knowledge-centric in terms of technology, process and people has been focusing on knowledge management strategically for the past two decades. Although the processes of knowledge creation and sharing are well researched, knowledge application is not well addressed. This study identifies project knowledge application and management support for knowledge application as the dimensions of knowledge application creating value to knowledge management in the software industry. Through a structural equation modelling approach, the relationships of management support for knowledge application, project knowledge application and effective knowledge management are tested. The findings show that the management support for knowledge application has an indirect effect—higher than a direct effect—on effective knowledge management through project knowledge application. The empirical study done on data collected from 540 software professionals of 170 National Association of Software and Services Companies-listed software companies proves the significance of knowledge application through management support and projects on effective knowledge management. But the role of management support is not as strong as project knowledge, and hence the organizations could enhance their culture of management support. The dimensions of knowledge application create value for people and process in software organizations by developing an environment of openness, collaboration and creativity, in addition to creating better response to changing environments which will help organizations to achieve the benefits of lean-agile software and system developments at scale.
Tourism has attained the status of a dominant economic activity in both the developed and the developing nations. The diversity of Indian heritage adds to the appeal and fascination of India as a tourist destination. Hampi world heritage site in Karnataka is an example of heritage tourism practices in India. To attract more number of tourists and for the preservation and conservation of the monuments the government of Karnataka established Hampi Development Authority (HDA) in the year 2002. HDA has taken many steps to satisfy the UNESCO in order to retain the world heritage site status of Hampi. The authority has carried out many activities to ensure the proper management and development of the world heritage site. Stoppage of quarrying in the heritage area, providing road infrastructure, removal of encroachments, setting up of the facilitation centre etc. are among the few initiatives by HDA towards planned tourism development in the area. Acquisition of land, excavations, optical fibre lighting etc. are certain area of cooperation of HDA with the Archaeological survey of India (ASI) at the world heritage site. The HDA plays a strategic role in promoting tourism in Karnataka by meticulously following the guidelines and suggestions of UNESCO to maintain the sustainability in and around the world heritage site of Hampi. This article also proposes few suggestions to HDA to shoulder the greater responsibility in the preservation and conservation of the monuments and also in projecting the world heritage site as a world-class tourist destination in the world tourism map.
The fundamental principle of sustainable coastal tourism lays on the crystal clear water, healthy eco-system and well maintained coastal environment. Coastal tourism has drawn international attention and become highly competitive as everyone tries to increase their market share in terms of beach visitors, both domestic and international. The result of the studies in U.S proved that beaches are leading tourist destination followed by national parks and historic sites (Houston& James R, 1996). Normally, any development plan at coastal area is always looked from a commercial perspective, whereas environmental aspect is concerned, it is being described as ―trying to minimize environmental effects‖. This attitude leads to unsustainable coastal tourism development which has a multiple negative implications not only on the environment and society but also it leads to economic leakage as it destroys the physical structures such as landscape, the bio-diversity and the eco-system- in the sea and on the land which makes the foundation for tourism activities at coastal area. India too has a coastline of 7525 Kms. Spread across nine states, in which Karnataka also has a part. Coastal Karnataka consists of three districts - Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. It has a coastal area of 300 Kms that comprises a handful of potential virgin beaches. With a systematic and careful development approach towards these potential beaches, the State's beach area can be turned into attractive destinations that can vie with the best that her two nearest coastal neighbours (Kerala and Goa) have to offer. This study is confined to five beaches of Dakshina Kannada (Ullal, Someshwar, Thannir Bhavi, Panambur and Surathkal) with a view to evaluate certain sustainable practices (community participation and benefits, environment protection, socio-cultural preservation and enrichment etc.) expected to be there on the study area. The researchers have used questionnaire method in order to collect the responses from the tourism related firms and local community.
Tourism has emerged as the global industry and has been playing a leading role in the all-round development of any country. A planned and sustained development of tourism industry in the form of 'Ecotourism' or 'Responsible Tourism' would lead the country to everlasting prosperity in all aspects. Intensive care should be given in developing tourism in the respective areas to maximize output and minimize the bad impacts. The co-operation and participation of local community is of great significance to all industries especially tourism industry since it deals with the people of different regions, languages, cultures etc. But it is equally difficult to elicit the encouragement, co-operation and support from the local community in developing ecotourism effectively. The major objective of this article presents the role of local communities in promoting ecotourism in any region. The authors have portrayed the emerging challenges to be faced in developing ecotourism and suitable strategies have been suggested to overcome the challenges.
