A compact slot loop antenna is proposed and investigated experimentally. The antenna consists of a slot loop printed on a substrate, and is fed by a coaxial cable. The loop perimeter is about λ/2 and the area of the antenna is about 1/8 of that of a microstrip antenna with the same operating frequency. The operating bandwidth (defined by return loss less than or equal to ‐10 dB) of the antenna is quite large (22%). The gain is comparable with that of a λ/2 dipole. The antenna should find wide applications in TV reception, mobile communications, and satellite communications. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.

This article presents a new numerical procedure involving the use of orthogonal polynomials in a Rayleigh‐Ritz procedure to investigate the wave propagation characteristics of uniform hollow conducting waveguides of polygonal cross section. As examples of the applicability of the new functions, the TM modes in metallic waveguides of rectangular and triangular cross sections have been studied. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Openwork shielding efficiency is predicted using a waveguide aperture discontinuity model. Theoretical results are obtained using modal analysis and are found to agree closely with Chen's [1] formulas for prediction of openwork shielding efficiencies.

A coplanar waveguide antenna (CWA) is proposed and investigated experimentally. The CWA consists of an open coplanar waveguide circuit and is fed by a coplanar waveguide with a characteristic impedance of 50 Ω. The measured return loss shows that the radiation mainly comes from the slot surrounding the open coplanar waveguide circuit. The area of the CWA is about 1/8 that of the corresponding microstrip antenna. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.

The Boundary integral method (BIM) is applied to a number of planar microstrip multiport junctions. The E fields for coupling ports are expressed as multimode series, enabling direct calculation of S parameters from the resulting matrix equation. Results obtained for cross junctions, T junctions, Y junctions, and 90° bends agree very well with those obtained from full‐wave analysis and other methods. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
