Nutritional Management and Behavior Therapy for Obesity The treatment of obese patients with accompanying disorders such as binge eating disorder (BED), bulimia nervosa or atypical eating disorders, requires sophisticated therapeutic and nutritional concepts which lead to weight reduction by normalizing eating behavior. Using low calorie diets to rigidly control nutritional intake can enhance and maintain symptoms of eating disorders. Short-term reduction in weight without stabilizing eating habits cannot be maintained in the long run. In a new treatment plan, nutritional experts target on problematic eating behavior, instead of limiting calorie intake. Training in a kitchen setting in addition to counseling serves the purpose of forming new eating patterns and putting theory into practice. The primary goal is not to achieve maximum weight reduction, but to establish long-term weight stability through normal eating behavior. Patients are given freedom for making decisions so that the modified eating patterns can be transferred to the home situation.
