Memory boxes filled with photographs, souvenirs, and other mementos are being used with increasing frequency to help people with dementia remember their past, either on a one-to-one basis or in group activities. Now, a new initiative involving partners from seven European Union countries has resulted in a touring exhibition of over 100 memory boxes which will travel around Europe, giving visitors a unique opportunity to see Europe's cultural heritage over the past 80 years. The boxes were compiled by older people themselves in collaboration with artists. They worked with artists who have received training in reminiscence over five or six sessions to create Life Portraits based on their memories and their mementos. Each memory box will have a short life story beside it and an explanation of the way it was created by the artist and the older person. This will be in all the languages of the project so that visitors in every country can enjoy and understand the display. The exhibition is supported by a programme of performances, lectures and workshops.Funding for this project came from the European Commission's sevenyear Culture 2000 programme, which aims to encourage creativity and mobility of artists, public access to culture, the dissemination of art and culture, inter-cultural dialogue and knowledge of the history and cultural heritage of the peoples of Europe. The application was prepared by Pam Schweitzer, Co-ordinator European Reminiscence Although not everybody will be able to visit the exhibition, details about the project and pictures from some of the memory boxes can be found at the Age Exchange website
