To determine the impact of a trace element and vitamin supplementation on infectious morbidity, a double-blind controlled trial was performed on 81 elderly subjects in a geriatric center during a 2-year period. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups, and received daily: placebo; trace elements /zinc 20 mg; selenium 100 µg); vitamins (vitamin C 120 mg; β-carotene 6 mg; α-tocopherol 15 mg); or a combination of trace elements and vitamins at equal doses. (1) Before supplementation, low serum values in vitamin C, folate, zinc and selenium were observed in more than two thirds of the patients. (2) After 6 months of supplementation, a significant increase in vitamin and trace element serum levels was obtained in the corresponding treatment groups: a plateau was then observed for the whole study. (3) Subjects who received trace elements (zinc and selenium) alone or associated with vitamins had significantly less infectious events during the 2 years of supplementation. These results indicate that supplementation with low doses of vitamins and trace elements is able to rapidly correct corresponding deficiencies in the institutionalized elderly. Moreover, zinc and selenium reduced infectious events.

In the present study, mdr1 gene expression was investigated by a sensitive reverse transcriptase-PCR assay in advanced breast cancer and in corresponding adjacent normal tissues obtained before and after treatment with primary chemotherapy. Comparatively to normal tissues, a significant induction of mdr1 expression was observed in untreated tumors (p = 0.0222). Similarly, a significant induction of mdr1 expression was revealed when treated samples were compared to untreated counterparts (p = 0.0222), but no differences were detected between tumor and normal samples (p = 0.3199). Noteworthy, a significant induction of mdr1 gene expression occurred in treated normal samples comparatively to untreated ones (p = 0.0037), and this induction was even more important in normal than in tumoral tissue (p = 0.0627). However, neither the basal expression nor the induction of mdr1 were correlated with subsequent response to chemotherapy or with survival. Thus, in agreement with previous reports, our data show that chemotherapy induce mdr1 gene expression in breast cancer cells, but they also indicate that a similar phenomenon occurs in adjacent normal tissues. Therefore, our results strongly suggest that mdr1 gene overexpression is not a characteristic of breast malignant cells, but rather constitutes a general phenomenon occurring both in normal and tumor cells which could explain at least in part the absence of relationship between mdr1 expression and the clinical outcome of breast cancer patients.

(T.) multiplex in France at the end of the middle Pleistocene before the appearance of M. (T.) suhterraneus completely reverses previous ideas which considered that M. (T.) multiplex was a sibling species derived from M. (T.) subterraneus during the Würmian glaciation. The Atlantic species M. (T.) pyrenaicus is probably derived from the middle Pleistocene species M. (T.) mariaclaudiue whose exact origin is unknown. M. (T.) sauii, M. (T.) tarentina. M. (T.) melirensis and M. (T.) henseli belong to the same geographic group. Perhaps M. (T.) savii derived from M. (T.) tarentina or shares the same ancestor with M. (T.) tarentina. M. (T.) duodecimcostarus probably indirectly derived from an Iberian specics of Allophuiomys such as A. chalinei, while M. (T.) lusitanicus was separated from M. (T.) duodecimcostutus about 60,000 years ago. A sketch of the stratigraphical records and geographical distribution of the Terricola species in Western Europe showing their phylogenetic relationships and migrations during the middle and upper Pleistocene is included.
