A major challenge in biology is understanding how organisms partition limited resources among physiological processes. For example, offspring production and self-maintenance are important for fitness and survival, yet these critical processes often compete for resources. While physiological trade-offs between reproduction and immune function have been documented, their regulation remains unclear. Most current evidence suggests that physiological changes during specific reproductive states directly suppress various components of the immune system; however, some studies have not found this clear relationship. We performed two experiments in female tree lizards (Urosaurus ornatus) that demonstrate the presence of trade-offs between the reproductive and immune systems under controlled laboratory conditions. These results also support the hypothesis that these trade-offs are a facultative response to resource availability and are not obligatory responses to physiological changes during reproduction. We found that (1) experimentally increasing reproductive investment under limited resources resulted in suppressed immune function and (2) experimentally limiting resources resulted in immunosuppression but only during resource costly reproductive activities. There seems to be a critical balance of resources that is maintained between multiple processes, and changes in the balance between energy intake and output can have major consequences for immune function.
Previous investigations suggest that male tropical birds have lower plasma testosterone concentrations than northern latitude species. To test whether this generalization is valid, we analyzed all currently available plasma testosterone data of tropical birds. We focused on peak breeding testosterone levels using phylogenetic and conventional statistics. Explanatory variables considered were social mating system, type of territoriality, breeding season length, and altitude. On average, tropical birds had lower mean peak testosterone levels than northern temperate birds. However, in several tropical species, testosterone levels were well within the range of northern latitude birds. Without controlling for phylogeny, breeding season length, type of territoriality, and altitude explained a significant proportion of the variance in testosterone levels. The shorter the breeding season, the higher the testosterone levels. Tropical birds that defend a breeding season territory had higher testosterone levels than birds that were year-round territorial or colonial, and testosterone levels were positively correlated with altitude. When controlling for phylogeny, only breeding season length predicted testosterone levels. In conclusion, we propose to refine previous notions of low plasma testosterone levels in tropical birds: short breeding seasons and perhaps environmental conditions at high altitudes precipitate conditions under which high testosterone levels are beneficial in the tropics.
Flow has been assessed in the gastric antrum using a velocity-sensitive version of the high-speed magnetic resonance imaging technique, echo planar imaging (EPI). Eight healthy volunteers attended fasted on three separate days and consumed 800 mL of either a 5% glucose (0.2 kcal mL-1), 10% glucose (0.4 kcal mL-1) or an isotonic mixed nutrient meal, Fresubin (1 kcal mL-1, 27.2 g fat). Gastric volumes were obtained at 10-min intervals for 1 h. Flow measurements were performed on a single slice through the antropyloric region 5 and 35 min after meal ingestion. Gastric volumes at 45 min were inversely proportional to the calorie density of the meal with (mean +/- SEM) 89 +/- 10%* of the Fresubin, 64 +/- 5%* of the 10% glucose and 41 +/- 5% of the 5% glucose remaining (*P< 0.005 vs 5% glucose). Substantial forward and backward antral flow was observed after all three meals in the initial 5-min imaging period. AT 35 min flow activity was significantly greater after both the high-calorie meals relative to the 5% meal (total number of flow events: Fresubin = 6.6 +/- 1.7,[symbol: see text] 10% glucose = 9.9 +/- 2.2, [symbol: see text] 5% glucose = 2.5 +/- 0.9,[symbol: see text] P < 0.03,[symbol: see text] P < 0.007 vs 5% glucose, n = 8). Peak forward velocities for the initial phase of emptying tended to be greater for the rapidly emptying 5% meal (5.9 +/- 0.8 cm-1) compared with the Fresubin (3.3 +/- 0.6 cm-1, P < 0.069, n = 8) and the 10% glucose (2.9 +/- 1.0 cm-1, P < 0.068, n = 8) meals. In spite of delayed gastric emptying, high-calorie meals were associated with substantial to and fro movements which may be important for meal tritruration and fat emulsification.
Cannibalism is widespread among many different organisms, and can have both negative and positive fitness consequences. Avoiding eating relatives can minimize negative fitness consequences of cannibalism. Such avoidance requires kin discrimination, but evidence for this ability among cannibals is limited with little data that address the cues used in such discrimination. We examined whether larvae of the ladybird beetle Harmonia axyridis avoid eating their relatives. We further manipulated environmental factors to create individuals that had similar or dissimilar rearing environments to begin to test for endogenous versus exogenous recognition cues. In our experiments, third‐instar larvae were much less likely to cannibalize if they were interacting with a relative. Larvae that did cannibalize kin required more encounters, and significantly delayed cannibalism, compared to larvae cannibalizing unrelated individuals. Acquired cues were less important. Even though the different rearing environment resulted in significantly different phenotypic effects, similarity or dissimilarity of rearing environment had no effect on cannibalism, and there was no interaction between environments and relatedness in cannibalism. We suggest that H. axyridis has a well‐developed kin discrimination system, and that kin recognition in this ladybird beetle is based on endogenous rather than exogenous cues. We also argue that these cues reflect either direct or indirect genetic effects on larval phenotypes.
These data suggest that bcl-2 expression in thyroid neoplasms is related to apoptosis, p53 expression is associated with high grade thyroid tumours, but may not be important in the apoptotic pathways in all thyroid tumours.
