This study examines the underlying components that determine the dividend policy statement of corporations in Nigeria. The study purposively select ninety-four (94) corporations out of the universe of companies listed in the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Financial ratios were extracted and computed from published annual audited financial reports spanning 2007 to 2017. This was informed by the ex-post facto research design adopted to observe key indicators of these corporations in retrospect. The panel regression analysis was used to explain the numerical phenomenon collated. The Durbin-Wu-Hausman specification test found the fixed effect model to be more suitable. The empirical results indicate that financial leverage has a significant negative impact on dividend payout; liquidity has an insignificant positive impact on dividend payout policy; profitability has an insignificant positive impact on dividend payout decision; and company size has a significant positive impact on dividend payout dicision. The study concluses that liquidity, profitability and company size are the determinants of the dividend policy of corporations in Nigeria. More specifically, company size was found to be a major determinant to the dividend policy statement of corporations in Nigeria. The study suggests that, corporations should sustain their liquid positions, asset base and profit levels at all times to meet the universe of desires of their shareholders.
This study examines the impact of credit management on firm performance amidst bad debts, among Nigerian deposit banks. Five hypotheses were formulated following the dependent variables of Return on Asset and Tobin Q. The independent variables employed for this study include: Loan Loss Provision, Loan to Deposit Ratio, Equity to Asset Ratio, and Loan Write off. This study is based on ex-post facto research design and employed a panel data set collected from fourteen (14) commercial banks over six years ranging from 2014 to 2019 financial year. We analyzed the data set using descriptive statistics, correlation and Ordinary Least Square Regression Technique. The random effect models established that non-performing loan, loan loss provision and equity to asset impact significantly on banks' performance in both Return on Asset and Tobin-Q models. This suggests that the sampled banks need to establish efficient arrangements to deal with credit risk management. In all, credit risk management indicators considered in this research are important variables in explaining the profitability of Nigerian commercial banks. However, based on the outcome from the empirical analysis, the study carefully recommends that investors and shareholders in these banks should be aware of the possible use of provisions for losses on nonperforming loans by managers for smoothening of profits. The shareholders specifically should be ready to meet optimal agency costs to reduce the manager's information asymmetry by hiring competent internal and external auditors.
This paper examines the impact of banks credit and macroeconomic dynamics on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Nigeria using annual data from 1992 – 2016. The long-run and short-run relationship amongst the variables were examined via the non-linear ARDL model. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) and Philip Perron’s (PP) test reveals that none of the variables were I(2). The Bounds test to cointegration confirms the existence of a long-run relationship. The non-linear ARDL results suggests that in both long and short-run estimations, that a rise in banks credit, government tax revenue and negative shocks in interest rate, inflation rate and exchange rate will trigger a fall in SMEs performance in Nigeria. Furthermore, it was observed that negative shocks tend to be larger in magnitude than positive ones. This study therefore recommends amongst others, that loans to the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sector be monitored properly, so as to ensure that such loans are not channelled to other purposes.
