The βsite amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), also known as βsecretase, is mainly expressed in the neurons of brain. It is a transmembrane aspartylprotease, responsible for producing toxic amyloid-β (Aβ) from amyloid precursor protein (APP), which is a pathological hallmark in Alzheimer's disease (Kumar et al., 2018). The cascade proteolytic cleavage of APP is led by BACE1 and followed by γsecretase, which leads to the production and release of amyloid-β peptide (Coimbra et al., 2018). The initial cleavage of APP by BACE1 yields
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
