Botox has been primarily used in cosmetic treatment for lines and wrinkles on the face, but the botulinum toxin that Botox is derived from has a long history of medically therapeutic uses. For nearly 13 years, until the introduction of Botox Cosmetic in 2002, the only FDAapproved uses of Botox were for crossed eyes (strabismus) and abnormal muscle spasms of the eyelids (blepharospasm). Since then botulinum A, and the seven other forms of the botulinum toxin, have been continuously researched and tested. Botox is a neurotoxin derived from bacterium clostridium botulinm. The toxin inhibits the release of acetylcholine (ACH), a neurotransmitter responsible for the activation of muscle contraction and glandular secretion, and its administration results in reduction of tone in the injected muscle. The use of Botox is a minimally invasive procedure and is showing quite promising results in management of muscle-generated dental diseases like Temporomandibular disorders, bruxism, clenching, masseter hypertrophy and used to treat functional or esthetic dental conditions like deep nasolabial folds, radial lip lines, high lip line and black triangles between teeth.Pranav Nayyar et al., BOTOX : Broadening the Horizon of Dentistry www.jcdr.net
Background: Bacteria and their by-products are responsible for various pulpal and periapical infections which can be classified as biofilm-mediated infections. Recently, nanoparticles have been introduced to decrease the bacterial load in endodontic infections. Aim and Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate the antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles alone and combination of silver nanoparticles with calcium hydroxide and chlorhexidine against Enterococcus faecalis . Materials and Methods: A pure culture of E. faecalis was used as the test microorganism. After 24 h of incubation the bacterial colonies were isolated and suspended in 5 ml of infusion broth followed by incubation at 37°C for 4 h. 0.5 McFarland of the bacterial suspension was prepared and then cultured on Mueller–Hinton agar culture medium with the help of a sterile swab. In each culture plate, five wells were created with a sterile pipette for placement of the samples. Results: Statistically significant difference in the antibacterial effect of the combination of silver nanocure gel with various medicaments was observed when compared to the effect of silver nanocure gel alone. Silver nanocure gel in combination with calcium hydroxide (Group B) was more efficacious as compared to silver nanocure gel alone (Group A) ( P < 0.001). Antibacterial activity of silver nanocure gel in combination with chlorhexidine (Group C) was also significantly higher than silver nanocure gel alone ( P < 0.001). Conclusion: The present study is an in vitro study, in which we concluded that the combination of all the intracanal medicaments is the best among for elimination of E. faecalis biofilm from the root canal. The above findings need to be tested in vivo also.
AIM: To study the efficacy of reciprocating single file system and multifile rotary systems in elimination of root canal bacteria and endotoxins. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Forty permanent single rooted mandibular premolars with straight canals inoculated with Escherichia Coli suspension for 21 days were selected for the study. Teeth were randomly divided into four groups (n=10) according to instrumentation system: Grp. A–Reciproc (VDW); Grp. B–WaveOne (Dentsply Maillefer); Grp. C–MTwo (VDW); and Grp. D–K3( Sybron Endo); Bacterial and endotoxin samples were collected with a sterile paper point before instrumentation and after instrumentation. Culture methods estimated the colony-forming units (CFU) and the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate test was used for quantification of endotoxins. Results so obtained were calculated and statistically analysed. RESULT: Results at S1 concluded that bacteria and endotoxins were found in all of the investigated root canals. After instrumentation all systems were associated with the significant reduction of the bacterial load and endotoxins respectively: Grp. A– Reciproc (88.25% and 89.10%); Grp. B– WaveOne (83.53% and 80.59%); Grp. C– MTwo(79.41% and 75.84%) and Grp. D– K3 (67% and 74.4%). Statistically no difference was found amongst the instrumentation systems regarding bacteria and endotoxin elimination (P <0.05). CONCLUSION: The reciprocating single file, Reciproc and WaveOne were as effective as the multifile rotary systems for the eradication of bacteria and endotoxins from root canals.
