Neurofibroma is a benign, slow-growing, peripheral nerve neoplasm. It presents as a solitary tumor or component of neurofibromatosis (NF) and von Recklinghausen's disease. The occurrence of solitary neurofibromas in the oral cavity is less frequent, and those in the palate are reported in less numbers. This report describes an unusual case of solitary neurofibroma in the hard palate which clinically mimicked a mucocele.
Mucormycosis also termed as phycomycosis or zygomycosis is less commonly seen in oral cavity. However, it is an invasive, life-threatening and aggressive fungal infection. It mostly targets individuals with altered immunological system and diabetes. In this recent pandemic situation, the individuals affected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are also affected with this fungal infection which commonly involves the maxilla. In this case report, we present a case of a 45-year-old female affected with mucormycosis in post-COVID scenario involving mandible which is quite rare situation. The case report covers clinical findings, radiographic investigations and histopathological details with brief on literature review. Since mucormycosis is aggressive fungal infection, it should be handled with multimodal approach to reduce the systemic damage of an individual, morbidity and mortality.
Background: The incidence of oral cavity neoplasms in the population has increased manifold over the years. Oral cancer is one of the common cancers in the world, common in India, and also in Bangladesh, Srilanka and Pakistan. Oral cancer is one of the few cancers, whose cause were known and hence it is possible to prevent. The real challenge in oral cancer lies in its prevention and early diagnosis. Objectives: 1.To study the morphological spectrum of neoplasms in oral cavity. 2.To study the age and gender incidence of various neoplasms. 3.To study the commonest sites of various neoplasms. 4.To evaluate or analyse the associated risk factors. Materials and methods: This is a prospective study of the cases attended to Government General Hospital, Vijayawada or Government Dental College Hospital Vijayawada, of oral cavity neoplasms. The biopsy of the tissues was carried out at the Department of Pathology, Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada. The study period was from June 2011 to August 2013 over a period of two years and three months. Results: The Study comprises a total of 74 surgical biopsies from oral cavity neoplasms received in the Department of Pathology, 52 of these were malignant lesions and 20 were benign tumour and 2 were premalignant conditions. The invasive squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent histological type of oral cavity neoplasms. Among the oral cancers, peak age th th incidence was the 5 and 6 decade of life. There was signicant male preponderance. Tongue was the most common site involved. Smokeless tobacco consumption was the commonest associated habit which leads to malignancy. Conclusion:In thisa study we observed that among the oral cavity neoplasms, high incidence of carcinomas are seen, among these squamous cell carcinomas are predominant.
Aim: The purpose of this case-control study was to evaluate the role of TNF-α in gingival crevicular fluid among obese women with chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 subjects were randomly selected for the study. The study population was further divided into three groups (Group 1, Obese women without periodontitis; Group 2, Non-obese women without periodontitis; Group 3, Obese with chronic periodontitis). Gingival crevicular fluid samples were taken for assessment based on clinical parameters like probing depth, bleeding on probing, and BMI. Results: There was significant increase in the level of TNF-α in gingival crevicular fluid from obese patients with chronic periodontitis and a positive correlation was found between TNF-α levels and values of the plaque index, OHI –I and BMI. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be concluded that GCF level of TNF-α was significantly higher in obese patients with and without chronic periodontitis, and highest in obese patients with chronic periodontitis group.
