Lip swellings may present as a common finding in clinical practice, and the causative factors could include a variety of local and systemic factors. Here we report a case of recurrent lip swelling in a 48-year-old male patient of Indian origin with no specific etiology or signs. The patient underwent a detailed investigation, and the diagnosis was made as ''cheilitis glandularis-CG'' on histopathological examination. CG is a rare disorder characterized by hyperplasia of the labial mucous glands and heterotopic mixed salivary glands as well as ectasia of glandular ducts. The patient was treated successfully with oral and topical corticosteroid with satisfactory improvement. The present case may provide an insight to the clinicians for a collaborative approach in the diagnosis of lip swelling and its management.
Background: OSF is a potentially malignant condition affecting the oral cavity and oropharynx. MMP-3 also known as Stromelysin -I is a key member of the MMP family which is responsible for degradation of collagen type II,IV,V,IX and X, proteoglycans, gelatins, fibronectin, laminin and elastin. It plays an important role in activation of pro MMP-1 into the active form of MMP-1 in malignant tissues. MMP-3 expression is low in normal tissues but it is altered during tumour formation, where remodeling of ECM is required. Purpose of the study: To assess the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms, Adenosine (Insertion/ Deletion) in -1171 5A > 6A in the MMP-3 promoter regions of patients with oral submucous fibrosis and in healthy individuals (controls). Methods: Thirty cases of OSF were categorized according to Khanna et al classification into four groups and Twenty age and sex matched controls were included in the study. Blood samples were collected in EDTA coated vacutainers and PCR restriction analysis was done. A statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test to assess the frequency and association of the alleles in the case-control group. Results: The result showed a statistical significance difference between the duration of habit and disease severity with polymorphisms. The result also showed a higher frequency of the 5A allele in the study group as compared to the controls. Conclusion: A long-term follow up of these patients is mandatory to see the prognosis and their susceptibility to malignancy. The positive outcome of an association of the disease with polymorphisms would result in the development of potential diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities in potentially malignant and malignant lesions.
Oral cancer is commonly known as mouth cancer. It can develop in any part of the mouth. More than one million cases arise per year in India itself. Risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption and human papilloma virus. Tongue is one of the most commonly affected site in the oral cavity. It usually develops in the squamous cells of the surface of the tongue which presents most commonly as squamous cell carcinoma. In the present case a sixty six year old male patient complains of ulcer in the lateral border of tongue which was histopathologically diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma of tongue with metastasis in the left submandibular lymph node. The patient was subjected to surgical excision of lesion followed by radiotherapy.
Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), previously known as keratocystic odontogenic tumor, are benign cystic lesions involving the mandible or maxilla and are believed to arise from dental lamina. What makes this cyst special is its aggressive behavior and high recurrence rate. This cyst is predominantly seen in younger patients (2nd–3rd decade) and may be seen in either the body or ramus of the mandible or maxilla. The distribution between sexes varies from equality to a male-to-female ratio of 1.6:1, except in children. There may be male predilection. Radiographically, it appears as unilocular or multilocular lesions with scalloped contour. This cyst is commonly detected incidentally. When symptomatic, jaw swelling and pain are common symptoms associated with this tumor. Less commonly, trismus and paresthesia may occur. Here, we present a case of OKC in a young male patient associated with an impacted right mandibular third molar.
