This study assessed the effect of financial literacy on the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Murg shopping mall, Abuja, Nigeria. The study utilised a descriptive survey research design wherein survey research instruments were employed. The study was carried out using a primary source in which qualitative data were collected using structured questionnaires and converted to quantitative data using five-point Likert scaling. An aggregate of 208 data collection instruments was administered, of which, 200 were properly filled and returned; representing a 96.1% returned rate. The data was then analysed with the application of inferential statistics like Regression and Analysis of Variance. Arising from the result, the null hypothesis was rejected since the calculated value was greater than the critical value (107.666>2.42). In conclusion, there was a significant effect of financial literacy on the growth of MSMEs in Murg Shopping Mall, Abuja. However, of the four proxies of financial literacy tested, debt management literacy had the highest positive impact on MSMEs' growth, followed by bookkeeping literacy and banking services literacy, whereas budgeting literacy was insignificant. It was therefore recommended that entities who wish to carry out effective corporate social responsibilities to grow MSMEs, should train them in the aspects of debt management literacy, banking services literacy and bookkeeping literacy.
The study sought to investigate the various mediating impacts of social skills in the form of political acumen and entrepreneurial opportunity recognition on perceived entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurship of university students. This was accomplished through the use of a survey research design. The study used primary qualitative data that was converted into quantitative data using 5-point Likert scaling. The questionnaire used for the study was tested for its reliability and validity using confirmatory factor analysis and was found to be adequate for the study. Data was gotten from 269 Bingham University student entrepreneurs in Nigeria and was analysed using structural equation modelling. The findings revealed that there is a positive significant relationship between perceptions of entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurship; political acumen and entrepreneurial opportunity recognition each play a mediating role between perceived entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurship; and social skills work together to mediate perceived entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurship. The study, therefore, recommends that student entrepreneurs should construct a learning network through their engagement in the classroom and develop professional entrepreneurial and social skills.
Several studies have revealed the importance of the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) concept in improving firm performance since its inception. However, because of the complications that small businesses face, there are still concerns about whether EO can improve their performance. This study investigated the effect of EO on the performance of small enterprises in Abuja, Nigeria. The objective of the study is to specifically assess the effect of the dimensions of EO viz. autonomy, innovativeness, proactiveness and risk-taking on the business performance of small enterprises in Abuja. The study made use of a survey research design to target a population of 2750 small enterprises in Abuja. Using the Taro Yamane formula, a sample size of 349 was obtained. Of the questionnaires randomly issued to the small enterprises, 338 were completed and returned representing a 96.84% response rate. The questionnaires contained closed-ended questions that were rated on a 5-point Likert scale. The data was then analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. Arising from the result, the regression model was significant at 0.000 with the calculated value greater than the critical value (16.910>2.399), hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. It was concluded that, overall, EO has a significant effect on business performance. However, of the dimensions tested, autonomy is insignificant, while innovativeness, proactiveness and risk-taking are significant. The study recommends that entrepreneurial development initiative that aims at building the EO dimensions of small enterprises should focus on innovativeness, proactiveness and risk-taking, rather than autonomy.
