Needle dislodgement during hemodialysis is a potentially lethal accident that, although rare, has yet to be completely eliminated in clinical dialysis. Fatal hemorrhaging can occur with the loss of proper needle positioning due to the continuously running pump of the dialysis machine. Cooperative efforts by medical professionals, scientists, and related industries have been made to remove all such risks. In this review, we highlight the recommended practices summarized by professional associations and recent progress regarding the research and development of auxiliary equipment for dialysis nursing aimed at preventing and/or providing early intervention for needle dislodgement.
