This paper examines the relationship between social stratification and generation position and their effect in determining the position and role of the aged in Australian society. It details the processes of segregation and isolation among the aged through enforced residential movement, retirement migration, and sickness. Finally, it concludes that power is the crucial connecting link between social stratification and generation position and that it is the complex interrelationships between these structures that provide the basis for the structuration of major status and class groupings among the aged.
