Management literature prescribes innovation as a stimulus for sustained competitive advantage in companies; however, the nature of the development in this field has resulted in the literature being broad and fragmented. This paper focuses on the body of literature concerned with the factors which influence innovation management in organisations. The aim of this research is to present a holistic view of the factors that affect innovation management. Using a systematic literature review approach, using over 100 papers, this research identifies nine key factors that impact on an organisation's ability to manage innovation. These nine factors have been identified as management style and leadership, resources, organisational structure, corporate strategy, technology, knowledge management, employees and innovation process. This paper then discusses the inductively derived model that presents the important relationships identified between the factors to present a holistic view of innovation management. From this, we open up the debate on innovation management as a systemic approach rather than being focused on the singular factors. We can therefore conclude that a number of dominant relationships exist between the factors with the innovation process being the only endogenous factor within the model.
In Bangladesh, the burden of diarrheal diseases is significant among children <5 years old. The objective of this study is to capture the prevalence of and health care–seeking behavior for childhood diarrheal diseases (CDDs) and to identify the factors associated with CDDs at a population level in Bangladesh. We use a logistic regression approach to model careseeking based on individual characteristics. The overall diarrhea prevalence among children <5 years old was found to be 5.71%. Some factors found to significantly influence the health care–seeking pattern were age and sex of the children, nutritional score, age and education of mothers, wealth index, and access to electronic media. The health care service could be improved through working in partnership with public facilities, private health care practitioners, and community-based organizations, so that all strata of the population get equitable access in cases of childhood diarrhoea.
To study the mechanism of the proposed assimilation of cholesterol, we cultured various strains of LactobaciUlus acidophilus and a Bifidobacterium sp. in the presence of cholesterol and oxgall. During culturing, both cholesterol and bile salts were precipitated. Because of bacterial bile salt deconjugation, no conjugated bile salts were observed in either the culture fluids or the pellets. During incubation, the cell count and optical density decreased. The degree of precipitation of bile salts and of cholesterol was dependent on the culture conditions. If L. acidophilus RP32 was cultured under acidifying conditions, the degree of precipitation of deconjugated bile salts was higher than if the pH was maintained at 6.0. Under acidifying conditions, cholesterol was coprecipitated with the bile salts, whereas in pH-controlled cultures, no coprecipitation of cholesterol was observed. From control experiments with different mixtures of bile salts, it appeared that coprecipitation of cholesterol during culturing was a result of formation of deconjugated bile salts, which have a decreased solubility at pH values lower than 6.0. It is concluded that the removal of cholesterol from the culture medium by L. acidophilus RP32 and other species is not due to bacterial uptake of cholesterol, but results from bacterial bile salt-deconjugating activity.
Purpose – It is argued that whilst operational and support processes deliver performance presently, it is the managerial processes that sustain performance over time. The purpose of this research paper is to better understand what these managerial processes are and how they influence organisational performance.\ud Design/methodology/approach – The theoretical background is reviewed covering literature on the subject of business process management, resourced-based view (RBV), dynamic capabilities and managerial processes. A research framework leads to qualitative case study-based research design. Data are collected from 37 organisations across Europe, classified according to their performance.\ud Findings – Findings suggest that the five managerial processes and their constituent managerial activities, identified through the empirical research, influence performance of organisations as an interconnected managerial system rather than as individual processes and activities. Also, the execution and maturity of this managerial system is influenced by the perceptions of the managers who organise it.\ud Research limitations/implications – Within the limitation of the study the discussion leads to eight research propositions that contribute to our understanding of how managerial processes influence organisational performance. These propositions and ensuing discussion provide insights into the content and structure of managerial processes, as well as contributing to the debate on RBV by suggesting that managerial processes and activities could be considered as valuable, rare and inimitable resources. Furthermore, the discussion on how managerial perceptions influence the organisation and execution of the managerial system contributes towards our understanding of how and why dynamic capabilities develop.\ud Practical implications – The results suggest that in higher performing organisations, managers: demonstrate a wider awareness of the overall managerial system; achieve a balance between\ud short-term and future-oriented activities; exploit their managerial activities for multiple purposes;demonstrate greater maturity of managerial activities; and pay greater attention to the organisation of the managerial system.\ud Originality/value – This paper presents one of the first empirical studies that attempt to understand how business processes, and particularly managerial processes, as an interconnected managerial system serve to sustain performance of organisations
In order to determine the reliability of the Cobb angle measurement as it is used in the clinical management of scoliosis, a methodological survey was carried out. In the measurement of a Cobb angle two phases can be distinguished: (a) the production of a spinal radiograph and (b) the measurement of the angle itself. In respect of the first phase, the variation in production of the radiographs was calculated on Cobb angle measurements made by one investigator on serial radiographs of patients who underwent spinal fusion for scoliosis and therefore had a fixed spinal curvature. For the second phase, the accuracy of Cobb angle measurement was investigated by comparing measurements on the same radiographs of 46 scoliosis patients obtained by three investigators, namely two orthopaedic surgeons and an orthopaedic fellow who was assigned to a school screening project. Results were expressed as a Spearman correlation coefficient and a standard deviation of the differences. The Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.98 for the repeated radiographs (production variation) and also 0.98 for the repeated measurements on one radiograph (interobserver measurement variation). The standard deviation of the differences in Cobb angle for the repeated radiographs amounted to 3.2 degrees and for the repeated measurements on one radiograph it was 2.0 degrees. Although there is a good reproducibility of the Cobb angle measurement between different investigators, the variation in production of a spinal radiograph is an important source of error. This should be taken into account when making decisions in scoliosis management.
