In this article the relationship between a number of school-related variables and the use of four electronic media; television, VCR, computer games and music use, was explored in a sample of 1001 Flemish primary school children studied in the 4th and 5th grades. This analysis was framed within a theory that posits that school experience influences media use. Four factors were found to be related to the use of these media in the regression analyses undertaken: gender (boys used these media more), family background (parental media use and in some cases S.E.S. were positively related to media use), school achievement (low achievers used some of the media more) and social psychological factors, in particular academic self-concept (low academic selfconcept pupils used the media more). A number of differences were found between the two waves, probably as a result of the children moving towards early adolescence in this sample.
