BackgroundMaintaining proper oral hygiene has an influence on oral health. Religious obedience may influence individual behavior. According to Islamic religious guidance, as recommended by an Islamic role model, it is obligated to maintain oral health and the recommended tool to use is miswak.PurposeTo describe miswak users’ behavior based on the theory of planned behavior.Subjects and methodsThe population of this study was the students of As-Salafi Al-Fitrah Islamic Boarding School who used miswak regularly and were healthy physically and mentally. One hundred and nine samples were chosen randomly and asked to complete a semi-open and a closed-ended questionnaire.ResultsPerceived behavioral control had the most dominant influence toward improving intention with β=0.211 and p<0.05. In contrast, attitude and subjective norms had less influence toward improving intention with β=0.190 and p>0.05, and β=0.164 and p<0.0001, respectively. Meanwhile, perceived behavioral control showed direct correlation toward action in model parameter with β=0.445 and p<0.0001.ConclusionPerceived behavioral control is the most dominant predisposing factor in increasing intention and attitude of miswak use.
Background. Indonesia has reported high prevalence and severity of early childhood caries (ECC). This is at 90% at age 3-5 years with higher mean of decay extraction or filling of teeth (def-t). Preschool children are one of the most vulnerable groups to dental and oral disease because they generally still not have proper behavior with regard to maintaining their oral health. Parental care is an important factor as it serves as the basis of the formation of behaviors that support or do not support childhood oral hygiene. One well-validated theory commonly used to test human attitudes and behaviors is the Theory of Planned Behavior. Objectives. Based on the theory of Planned Behavior, to describe the behavior of mothers on teaching toothbrushing to preschool children. Material and methods. We undertook a cross-sectional analytic study with sample size 218 of mothers of kindergarten children in Surabaya. We obtained our data by giving a questionnaire to mothers that consists of 35 semi open ended and closed ended questions. Results. The variables of Theory of Planned Behavior which showed significant effect on intention to act were attitude and PBC with p-value < 0.005. Subsequently, attitude, subjective norms, and PBC were tested together to measure the influence to intention -which resulted in a R2 of 0.37. Conclusions. Attitudes and PBC are the most dominant factors in improving the intentions and behavior of mothers towards teaching effective toothbrushing practices to their children.
Objectives
The aim of this study is to demonstrate how an integrated information system of mother and toddler cohorts can be developed as a basis of the continuum of care approach that subsequently can be used as the basis of early detection of risk factors of maternal mortality.
Methods
This research was carried out qualitatively. The data was collected through three techniques: in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and document studies at six public health centers located in four sub-districts of Surabaya, Indonesia. This research was conducted from 2016 to 2018.
Results
The data collected from this research has become a basis input data requirement analysis for an integrated mother and toddler cohort information system. The system accommodates all the variables in each period of pre-marriage, pregnancy, labor, infancy and toddlerhood. The system facilitates healthcare workers to retrieve data and information related to mother and toddler health status.
Conclusions
The availability of various pieces of information enables the health status of mothers and toddlers to be monitored thoroughly throughout their long-life cycle. This continuum of care approach is beneficial in the early detection and management of risk factors of maternal mortality, such as pregnancy complications as well as childbirth and postpartum complications.
