The development and anatomy of these glands have been described by Hilton ( '02), who found that they were rudimentary in the female, but in the male attained a certain level of development at the time of sexual maturity, and became greatly hypertrophied each year a t the approach of the mating season.Noble ('29) has described glands of similar function in the male plethodontid salamanders in which, however, the glands are not restricted to one location but are widely scattered over the dorsal surface, being abundant on the eyelids, temporal region, and especially the base of the tail. The relation of these hedonic glands to the sex hormones was investigated by Noble ('31), who removed the ovaries from adult Desmognathus fuscus females and implanted testes. Hedonic glands appeared in the skin of the base of the tail 62 to 220 days after implantation. They resembled young granular glands of the integument, but apparently arose independently of both these and the mucous glands. Many recent papers indicate that the hypophysis-gonadreproductive tract interrelationship, so strikingly demonstrated for mammals, prevails also in amphibians.
