BackgroundBrucellosis is a neglected debilitating zoonosis with a high prevalence in many developing countries. Bovine brucellosis is widespread in Cameroon but the epidemiological situation of human brucellosis is not known. A cross sectional study was carried to determine the seroprevalence and factors associated with bovine and human Brucellosis among abattoir personnel and pregnant women in Ngaoundéré, Cameroon.MethodsSerum sample from 590 abattoir cattle and 816 plausible occupational risk and vulnerable humans to brucellosis (107 abattoir personnel and 709 pregnant women) were collected and screened for anti-brucella antibodies using Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) and ELISA tests. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data on socio-demographics and risk-factors. The differences in proportions between seropositive and seronegative reactors were tested using odds-ratio and χ2tests.ResultsBovine brucellosis seroprevalence was at 3.40% (n = 590; 3.4% for RBPT, 5.93% for i-ELISA). Human Brucella seroprevalence was at 5.6% among abattoir personnel (n = 107; 5.6% for RBPT, 12.15% for Brucella IgG ELISA) and 0.28% in pregnant women (n = 709; both tests). Breed (P < 0.00001) was associated with increased risk of brucellosis in cattle and the seroprevalence was highest among the Djafoun (OR = 16.67, 95%CI: 4.49–28.85) and Akou (OR = 16.96, 95% CI: 0.10–23.91) cattle compared to the other breeds. There was a moderate positive correlation (R2 = 0.5025) of Brucella IgG concentrations (> 200 U/ml) and clinical data for Brucella IgG ELISA seropositive humans. Several potential factors were associated (P > 0.05) with increased risk of human brucellosis seroprevalence among the abattoir personnel. The abattoir personnel were essentially males; the seropositive respondents were male and did not use protective equipment at work. Handling of foetus and uterine contents (OR = 13.00, 95%CI: 1.51–111.88) was associated with increased risk of human brucellosis.ConclusionsAntibrucella antibodies are prevalent in cattle (3.40%), among abattoir personnel (5.60%) and in pregnant women (0.28%) in Ngaoundéré, Cameroon. The study reports the first evidence of human brucellosis in Cameroon and therefore, an indication of a real public health problem. Public awareness campaigns and health education especially among livestock professional and in agropastoral communities should be highlighted to disseminate knowledge, associated risk factors and control measures of brucellosis.
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic vector borne infectious disease of major medical and veterinary importance particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is dearth of epidemiological knowledge of the disease in Cameroon. We conducted a cross-sectional study (January 2016–January 2017) to investigate the seroprevalence and potential risk factors of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in sheep and goats in the North region of Cameroon. Stratified sampling approach was used to select herds where sera were collected from 680 randomly selected small ruminants (355 goats and 325 sheep) in eight localities (Kismatari, Lagdo, Pitoa, Garoua, Bocklé, Dembo, Poli and Touboro) within three administrative divisions (Bénoué, Mayo-Rey and Faro) in the North region. Anti-RVFV antibodies were detected using a competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), while a capture ELISA was used for the detection of specific RVFV-Immunoglobulin M (Ig-M) antibodies. We evaluated the associated potential risk factors of RVF in small ruminants based on observations of animal-related intrinsic and extrinsic factors in combination with serological results. The results revealed that 3.4% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.2–5.1%) of sampled animals and 24.6% (95% CI: 15.1–37.1%) of 65 sampled herds were seropositive for anti-RVFV antibodies and no difference in seropositivity between sheep and goats at individual animal as well as at herd levels was observed. Localities along hydrographic or large water banks such as Kismatari (OR: 14.333, (95% CI: 1.436–145.088)) and Pitoa (OR = 11.467 (95% CI: 1.249–50.306)) were significantly associated to RVFV antibody seroprevalence in a simple logistic regression. In addition, the multiple regression analysis showed that age and access to water points significantly influenced RVFV antibody seroprevalence in small ruminants. This study revealed that anti-RVFV antibodies are present in sheep and goats in the North region of Cameroon. It highlights the likely endemic circulation of RVFV in the considered localities despite the absence of clinical cases reported in animals or humans. Under these conditions, it is necessary to set up an early warning, surveillance and control strategy based on epizootic risk.
Consumption of milk and dairy products has increased significantly in Senegal in the last decade, and a large part of the local production comes from small processing units spread all over the country. We collected 85 bulk-tank milk samples from 68 smallholder dairy farms throughout the territory. Microbiological quality of milk samples was analyzed according to the official standards. Further, raw milk and pasteurized milk were screened for Mycobacterium bovis, Coxiella burnetii, and anti-Brucella abortus antibodies. Ninety-three percent of pasteurized milk samples, 92% of raw milk samples, and 81% of sour milk samples failed to meet official standards. Pathogens detected in milk were C. burnetii (6/41, 15%), which seems to be endemic in Senegal, coagulase-positive staphylococci (18/70, 26%), and Salmonella Johannesburg in one sample. Further analysis of coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated from samples containing more than 10(4) colony-forming units per gram showed the presence of enterotoxigenic strains in 9 of the 10 samples. These results confirm the poor microbiological quality of milk produced by small units in Senegal, especially and surprisingly of pasteurized milk. This highlights the need to implement good hygiene practices, particularly in the postpasteurization process, and an effective monitoring throughout the production and delivery chain.
African Horse Sickness (AHS) is a non-contagious viral disease that is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa countries and poses an important production and health threats of equines. AHS can induce up to 95% mortality in horses and 10% in donkeys. However, there is dearth of information of its epidemiology in donkeys in Cameroon. This study was therefore carried out to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of AHS in donkey in three Northern regions of Cameroon. Donkey sera were subjected to the ELISA blocking test for the determination of antibodies against African Horse Sickness Virus (AHSV) and positive samples were subjected to Capture-ELISA to determine the presence of antigens. Spleen samples were collected from fifteen donkey carcasses, of unknown causes of death, were screened using capture ELISA and positive reactors confirmed using conventional PCR. Potential risk factors associated with AHS were assessed based on the information collected in the field. The Chi-Square test and the Odd ratio were used to test the association between prevalence and the different variables. Of the 266 sera obtained, 219 were positive for anti-AHS virus antibodies corresponding to a sero-prevalence of 82.33% [95%CI: 77.30 – 86.44] and no antigen detected from the corresponding whole blood. Locality (p<0.001, χ2= 22.96) and age (p<0.001, χ2= 24.31) significantly influenced sero-positivity of the donkeys. The sero-prevalence was higher (p<0.05) in the North (87.18% [95%CI: 81.03 – 91.55]) and Far North regions (84.81% [95%CI: 75.30 – 91.09]) than in the Adamawa region (51.61% [95%CI: 34.84 – 68.03]). Donkeys that were at least 3 years old (89.42% [95%CI: 84.22 – 93.05]) were at higher risk of AHS (p<0.0001, χ2 = 22.54, OR: 4.56 [95%CI: 2.36 – 8.82]) compared to young animals of less than 3 years old (32.14% [95%CI: 27.15-37.13, OR: 0.15]). The study highlights that AHS is highly endemic in all age groups and both sexes of donkey populations in Northern Cameroon and donkeys maybe playing important roles in the maintenance of the disease in equine populations in the country.
