Studies were conducted between 1993 and 1996 using 3 natural grape vine populations, 1 susceptible laboratory strain, and 1 resistant selected strain of Drosophila melanogaster L. In vitro monooxygenase activity (ethoxycoumarine-O-deethylation) (ECOD) was recorded from microsomal fractions of all strains. Results varied over a 6-fold range between susceptible laboratory Canton and resistant selected RDDT strains and over a 2-fold range between the Canton strain and natural populations of flies. Few significant variations of ECOD activity were detected among the natural populations despite many insecticide treatments, but activities were significantly correlated with toxicological tolerance to 5 of the 15 insecticides (deltamethrin, fipronil, chlorpyriphos ethyl, DDT, and diazinon). Moreover, immunoblotting responses of microsomal protein encoded by Cyp6A2 showed that the levels of expression were quantitatively correlated with toxicological tolerance to almost the same group of insecticides (deltamethrin, fipronil, chlorpyriphos ethyl, DDT, fenvalerate, and fenthion). However, the level of CYP6A2 expression in some natural strains (still weakly resistant) was almost comparable with one of the resistant strains. In vivo monooxygenase activity recorded in individual abdomens of flies showed that frequency distributions of ECOD activity in natural populations overlapped those of the resistant and laboratory strains, which were much narrower. Substantial and fast frequency changes (of the narrowness) that obtained in laboratory were related to either the time of rearing of 1 of the natural populations or selecting this population with an insecticide that has a toxicology correlated with both of the monooxygenase signs measured. Perspectives on using the CYP6A2 expression and ECOD activity for detecting a resistance mechanism by cytochrome P450 in field populations are discussed.
Freshwater crab Paratelphusha lamellifrons from Padma River were investigated for proximate and fatty acid composition. Proximate analyses of the claw and body meat of crab revealed the presence of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash and their amount ranges between 71.72%-81.30%, 35.01%-49.06%, 13.24%-17.64% and 19.62%-22.12% respectively, on a dry weight basis. Except lipid (17.64%), claw meat content higher amount of moisture (81.30%), protein (49.06%) and ash (22.12%) compared to body meat. The fatty acid composition was analyzed by GC-FID and total 12 types of fatty acid were recorded in the fat isolated from crab. Among the recorded fatty acids MUFA were observed as the highest (42.85%), SFA were the second (25.96%) whereas, polyunsaturated (PUFA) were the lowest (15.02%). The fatty acid compositions showed that the SFA, MUFA and PUFA were dominated by palmitic acid (20.49%), oleic acid (23.99%) and linoleic acid (9.81%) respectively. The proximate and fatty acid composition of the present study demonstrated that these species (P. lamellifrons) are a promising source of essential fatty acids ω-3 and ω-6 namely, DHA and EPA.
A total of 6 species of freshwater mussels under the family Unionidae, order-Unionoida were collected, which are new records for Bangladesh. The viridula were provided in this paper. Population density and morphometric parameters were measured. Moreover, economic importance and economic role were stated.
Studies were made on the number of egg clutch, copulating pairs, duration of mating, duration of egg laying, and weight of egg clutch of Pila globosa by inducing it with Pituitary Gland (PG) and Optic Tentacle cut (OT) under laboratory condition. The effect of inducing the animal with PG and OT cut showed that it resulted in an increase in the number of egg clutch in comparison with that of the control. In control animals the number of egg clutch was found to be 0.30±0.02 which was 20.93% of total egg clutches laid. Whereas in animals with Pituitary Gland (PG) and Optic Tentacles (OT) cut the number of egg clutch were 0.43±0.61 and 0.70±0.86 which were 30.23% and 48.83% of total egg clutches laid respectively. The animals injected with pituitary gland extract and optic tentacle cut showed an increase in the number of egg clutch in comparison with that of the control animals. In control animals, duration of mating, duration of egg laying, and weight of egg clutch were found as, 3.23±0.29hrs., 5.37±1.51hrs., and 8.38±g respectively. The pituitary gland (PG) injected and optic tentacle (OT) cut, duration of mating, duration of egg laying and weight of egg clutch were found as, 3.52±0.26hrs., 4.64±1.63hrs., and 8.54±2.10g.; 3.51±0.33hrs., 5.47±1.19hrs., and 8.45±2.53g respectively. The physical conditions of Beel Koshba consisting of water temperature(25.36±5.12°C/day), water depth (204.96±110.36cm/month) and water transparency (30.91±6.78cm/day) were recorded. The chemical parameters of total hardness, alkalinity, pH, DO, CO2 andammonia were 146.60±13.36 mg/l, 143.30±9.33 mg/l, 7.05±0.75, 6.03±1.08 mg/l, 8.64±0.88 mg/land 0.73±0.31 mg/l respectively. A total of 54 species of different vegetations 123 species ofphytoplankton and 73 species of zooplankton were recorded from the beel. A total of 104 speciesof fish and Annelids (8), arthropods (12), molluscs (15), amphibian (8), reptiles (21), avis (40) andmammals (12) were identified.
