The high vapour pressure of Mg limits the liquid route processing of its alloys, in particular those where Mg is alloyed with transition metals. This difficulty can be overcome vapour physical vapour deposition (PVD) processing, which enables the production and assessment of a wide range of alloys, even in systems where the melting point/s of alloying elements are higher than the boiling point of Mg.The PVD method developed at DERA has been used to manufacture Mg-TM (TM=Ti,V,Zr) alloys with novel microstructures. The corrosion behaviour of the alloys in saline environment was investigated using weight loss tests and electrochemical techniques. The bulk and surfaces of . the as-deposited and corroded alloys were also characterised. The Mg-Ti and Mg-Zr alloys exhibited improved corrosion behaviour which is comparable or better than the corrosion resistance of commercial alloys.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
