Background: Lactation is a natural defense against pregnancy. As long as a mother is nursing, she is delaying the return of fertility. This study aimed at evaluating the state of knowledge, among mothers of infants aged 0-6 months, on lactational amenorrhea as a contraceptive method, as well as these women's breastfeeding habits. Methods: In this descriptive study 646 mothers were included. A questionnaire was used to interview one-on-one the mothers of infants aged 0-6 months, who had consented to such an interview. The data were evaluated by using the SPSS program; percentage, mean, and chi-square analyses were used. Results: To the question: Does lactating protect you from pregnancy? 82.5% answered in the negative. While 28.6% of the subjects who had received family planning counseling postpartum had answered "yes" to this question, in subjects who had not received such counseling this proportion was 14.9% (p=0.001). Those who had first done so within half an hour from delivery made up 81.4% of the sample. The proportion of those who had not yet resumed menstruations was 62.3%. All of the mothers who had not resumed menstruating were still nursing; 99.2% were breastfeeding also at night. Conclusions: A rural area of Turkey, the use of LAM as a contraceptive method remains low, even though the breastfeeding ratio is high.
Abstract. The meaning of the word of metaphor is represented as likening indirect speech. A metaphor provides a more clear transfer about an idea encountered in an event, situation or a concept. The aim of this study was by the use of metaphor to learn the thoughts and feelings of nursing students about computer education. The study included 65 (45 female, 19 male (1 experimental subject has been excluded because of missing data)) nursing students of Kocaeli University (please note that gender wasn't specified on the first survey form). Students were asked by survey form to provide their age, gender, geographical region, place of residence within Kocaeli and their reason for choosing the department. We examined nursing students as opposed to computer education through the use of metaphors. Respondents filled in the blanks: "Computer education is similar to/like … because…." 42 different metaphors were produced. Most of the metaphors produced pertained to the human brain, world, television, smart room, encyclopedia etc. When we separated them into categories and examined them, we see 18 metaphors in the category of guidance and investment in information. Nowadays the use of computers is very important in nursing just as it is in all job groups, particularly in their student life in operating Microsoft Office programs, Acrobat Reader and the like.
Abstract. "Metaphor" word is described as a figurative expression in Turkish. A person transmits more explicitly his/her thoughts that are about an event or a concept he/she experienced. The aim of this study was to reveal emotions and thoughts of 1st class students in nursing about Anatomy lesson. 62 people who are students at 1st class in Vocational School of Health Services in 2014-2015 academic year have attended to our study. In questionnaire anthropometric and demographic traits of them were asked. They were wanted to create a metaphor about anatomy by filling in the blanks in " Anatomy resembles ...../ Anatomy is like .... ; because ..... " At the end of the assesment it has been detected that 44 metaphors have been produced. In these metaphors the most produced are ocean, puzzle, etc. When we divide these metaphors into categories and investigate them, there is an accumulation in discovering/revealing category with 24 metaphors. We believe that the metaphors which the students will generate, determining how to be lectured theoretical and practical anatomy lessons in a way that students are able to comprehend, will guide them.
Background As with all healthcare professionals, anatomy is an indispensable course for nursing and midwifery students in order to be successful in other courses and in their professional lives. This survey-based study was conducted with nursing and midwifery students from the Faculty of Health Sciences to find out their perceptions about the “Anatomy” concept through metaphors. Methods The metaphor analysis technique was used for the study. This techniques is used as a phenomenological research method as part of a qualitative research approach. The study was conducted between January and February 2021 at a faculty of health sciences of a public university in Turkey. The study universe and sample consisted of the students from the Faculty of Health Sciences of our university. Among a total of 260 nursing and midwifery students, 200 students voluntarily agreed to participate in the study survey. Since 4 students failed to produce valid metaphors, the study was completed with 196 students. The study data were collected using a brief questionnaire on demographic characteristics and by prompting the students to complete the metaphorical statement “Anatomy is like … because…”. Results The nursing students produced negative metaphors more commonly than the midwifery students. Despite this, in general, positive metaphors were predominantly produced by the students from both departments. Second year students were found to have more positive views about anatomy than first year students. Conclusions Since anatomy is a fundamental discipline for healthcare professionals, the perceptions of nursing and midwifery students about anatomy are very important. While the metaphors of “taking a breath” and “world atlas” about anatomy shows the awareness of the significance of anatomy among the students, metaphors of “ocean”, “abyss” and “desert” are striking examples that indicate how desperate they feel about learning anatomy.
