Different types of crosses are applied in Coptic art whether for symbolic or decorative purposes. Swastika and Swastika meander decorations are among the geometrical decorations which are dated back to ancient eras. They were well known and found in many cultures. In Egypt, swastika was known since ancient Egyptian eras and the meander decoration was existed since the Greek Period. They are still in use during the Coptic era. The research focuses on the decoration of swastika and meander ornaments applied in the Coptic art. In addition to describe, analyze, and trace these decorations before and during the Coptic era till the tenth century in Egypt. The research followed descriptive and analytical methods of research.
Monastic vestment composes a fundamental and crucial part of Coptic heritage. It distinguishes the monastic life and form a distinctive image of the new monk. Liturgical headdress was an early part of the monastic costume, and they were used to distinguish the monk in the monastic hierarchy. The qaslah and the qalansuwa are among those headdress applied on Coptic artifacts; and looks similar and confusing to distinguish among them thus; this paper aims to study their symbolism, history and depictions on Coptic artifacts from the 10 th till the 18 th century, through an iconographical and analytical methodology of work.
Coptic illuminated manuscripts Miniatures Archangel Michael Archangel Gabriel Egypt has always been known for its huge collection of manuscripts since its earliest times and through its different successive historical periods. It is in Egypt that the paper manufacture has begun and the ancient Egyptian alphabet was established. The early Coptic manuscripts used to be kept in the churches, monasteries, and even in the private houses of Coptic noblemen. Religious texts, hymns, and prayers represent the majority of such Coptic texts; these were sometimes appended with characters and portraits, which enforced the meaning and added holiness to the manuscripts. This paper aims to study the miniatures and the accompanied themes in Coptic illuminated manuscripts, in particular those associated with the archangels Michael and Gabriel, who enjoyed a great veneration and holiness in Coptic traditions. This article studies the iconography of such illuminated Coptic manuscripts within and outside Egypt from the 9 th to the 16 th century AD. It gives a description of such illuminated manuscripts before considering the iconography dating, and provenance and origin of the manuscripts. It finally presents an analytical study and draws out the conclusions.
