Nigeria textile industry is characterized by questionable incentives, political uncertainty, acute power shortage, poor infrastructure, smuggling and red-tape bureaucracy, among others. The study modified the endogenous growth model within a time series (1986 and 2015) estimation techniques of Autoregressive Distributed Lagged model (ARDL). Findings revealed that the effect of simple tariff rate on textile industry is negative and statistically significant in the long-run; while trade liberalization policy measure through simple tariff rate has a lag effect before it can be effective in the textile industry. In both short and long run, real effective exchange rate depreciation worsens the performance of the textile industry in Nigeria. In the long run, a 1.0% rise in trade openness would decrease the level of textile industry performance by about 17.49%, while factor affecting textile industry performance in the short run are simple tariff rate, financial development, exchange rate changes, trade openness and labor and capital inputs respectively. The study concluded that Trade liberalization has a lag effect on textile industry performance and a significant effect on the performance of the Nigerian textile industry. It is therefore recommended that government should make concerted efforts toward providing a favorable business environment, reducing inflation and improve the infrastructural facilities for the textile industry to strive.
The Political economy of a country is influenced by the economic philosophy and political ideology of the leadership. Evidence suggests a positive relationship between a country's economic development and the macroeconomic environment. For instance, the impact of macroeconomic policies adopted upon political emancipation in South Africa has been questionable. With a neoliberal undertone, the policy's prevision to attract long-term foreign capital, which was expected to drive economic growth and generate employment, has proven to be over-ambitious. Research was done on the perception of the policymakers and investors on the effectiveness of the policy initiatives on capital inflow and socioeconomic variables. Using descriptive statistics, the research suggests that the current policies need to be reformed to achieve socioeconomic peacefulness, which is essential to creating an investor-friendly environment. Increasing social unrest in the country makes it vital to formulate policies that are capable of improving the country's investment competitiveness. If unchanged, the current socioeconomic ills that have generated a series of uprisings may become unmanageable, thereby precipitating political instability.
This study focuses on the determinants of employee performance at the University of Venda, premised on the extent to which stakeholders are involved in the strategic planning of the institution. The aim of the study was to establish the effect of stakeholders involvement in the strategic planning of the University of Venda and to determine how different stakeholders are involved in the strategic planning and ultimate implication of their involvement - or lack of involvement - on the overall performance of the institution. Using a survey approach, this study revealed that the process of strategic planning is absolutely dominated by the management cadre, thereby sending the other stakeholders into the doldrums. In the practical sense (as indicated by the findings), those who are directly affected by the strategic plan are least involved in the process of the planning. Because of the lack of involvement, the majority of the stakeholders became de-motivated, culminating in their lack-lustre approach toward the implementation of the orchestrated plan. The resultant lack of buy-in by the affected stakeholders - essentially the internal stakeholders (staff members and the student community) - lays credence to the paucity of the process and the resultant poor performance on a number of indicators.
