In conventional sensory systems, mechanical and electronical components are generally operating at seperated locations. Intelligent sensors integrate mechanical and electronical elements to a single system, thus offering new facilities for a common error compensation. A well known method applicable to a wide range of sensor types is to calculate the corrected measurement value by interpolating a sensor correction function represented by a two dimensional characteristic diagram. A processor dedicated for this interpolation task can save a lot of hardware resources and computation time compared with a solution applying a standard microcontroller. The dedicated processor requires only little chip area if it is integrated into the signal processing chip. In the following, the logic design for a dedicated interpolation processor is described. The functionality was verified first by an implementation in a programmable logic device, whereby the characteristic diagram was stored in an external EPROM. The processor design is applicable for an integrated signal processing circuit.
