Background:
Implant therapy, in India, has flourished in recent years and is being practiced widely by many dental practitioners today. Along with the increasing number of implants being placed today, there has also been a constant rise in the number of complications associated with it.
Objectives:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of implant placement and management of peri-implant diseases among dental professionals.
Materials and Methods:
A total of 568 dental practitioners were approached with a questionnaire for collecting data related to demographic details, experience, and knowledge about implant placement and management of its complications. Of these, only 262 were included as part of the statistical analysis. This data collected were compiled and analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results:
Results showed that most dentists who participated in this study have adequate knowledge about etiological factors and its management. Those who acquired implant skills through sources that are not in accordance with accepted standards had unsatisfactory knowledge and practice behavior.
Conclusion:
The awareness and knowledge regarding the implant procedures and their complications such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis were higher in self-trained dentists and by dentists who are practicing for >10 years and calls for updating of knowledge.
Aim:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the survival of single implant supported cantilever prosthesis (ISCP) replacing missing two adjacent natural teeth in the anterior mandible.
Settings and Design:
In vivo
- Prospective cohort study.
Materials and Methods:
Thirty patients with missing both mandibular central incisors were selected. A single implant was used to replace the missing teeth and restored with cantilever screw-retained prosthesis. Twenty-two patients were followed for 3 years for the implant and prosthetic success.
Statistical Analysis Used:
Weibull test for survival probability.
Results:
Survival probability of the ISCP for the first 100 days was found to be 97.55%, for 200 days, it was 71.4%, for 250 days, it was 46%, and for 365 days, it was 3.9%, i.e., 20 prosthesis had screw loosening after prosthetic loading. However, it increased to 95.2% at the end of 3 years.
Conclusion:
Screw-retained ISCP developed early technical complications. After prosthetic loading, the survival probability of the screw-retained ISCP was very low (3.9%) at one year, which increased to 95.2% after retightening and retorquing of the abutment screw, porcelain repair and conformation of the tongue to the prosthesis. The most common prosthetic failure was screw loosening (81%), followed by porcelain fracture (14.3%), and implant survival of 95% at the end of three years.
COVID-19 global pandemic has become the biggest challenge by causing health crisis across the world due to its contagious nature. Salivary gland acts as a reservoir of virus due to which contaminated saliva plays a pivotal role in COVID-19 transmission among humans. Infection transmission from symptomatic patients as well as asymptomatic carriers is inevitable while performing aerosol generating procedures because contaminated aerosols have potential to float in the air for a considerable amount of time and be inhaled by dentist, dental auxiliary and other patients. Hence, it is a matter of utmost importance to keep upgrading the strategies for prevention of transmission as the outbreak of SARS-COV 2 has clearly placed the health care professionals at highest risk. As excess salivary secretion results in more aerosol contamination in dental procedures, leading to higher risk of transmission antisialogogues can be used to reduce salivary production. This new strategy will be helpful towards reducing aerosol transmission inorder to prevent and control the spread of this highly infectious disease. The aim of this present review is to propose the possible use of antisialogogues (glycopyrrolates) as an adjunct aid in reducing the risk of transmission from contaminated aerosols.
