Continuous rising population is necessitating the maximization of food production per unit area i.e. productivity. There has been already well known different advance methods like aquaponics, nutrient film technique (NFT), aeroponics, etc. but they do not have that much good land utilization. So, to conciliate this land problem vertical farming was introduced. It utilizes the vertical unused space which or else left unused in other farming systems. This can also facilitates the peoples to get the fresh cut vegetables regularly. Moreover, nowadays peoples are showing their keen interest towards their health and to meet their healthy food requirements, salad vegetables are the best options as due to nutritional values. The vegetables have high number of health benefits. They are rich sources of minerals, vitamins and various bioflavonoids which are essential for the growth and development of human beings. The vegetables can also be eaten raw in form of salad. The vegetables are also suited best under this structure as these are short duration and provides high net returns. These can be grown by using various growing substrates viz. perlite, coco-peat, vermiculite etc. to enable fast growing and high yield.
To study the effect of different organic amendments on growth, yield and quality of broccoli a field experiment was conducted during 2021–2022 in the Agriculture Research Farm, Lovely Professional University, Punjab A Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) with two factors was used. Factors 1 and 2 are varieties (V1: Palam Vichitra and V2: Palam Kanchan) and biofertilizers (T1: Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria @ 2 % + Azotobacter @ 2 %, T2: Phosphate solubilizing @ 2 %, T3: Azotobacter @ 2 %, and T0: Control). A total of eight treatments were used, i.e., T1V1 (Palam Vichitra X Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria @ 2 % + Azotobacter @ 2 %), T2V1 (Palam Vichitra X P.S.B @ 2 %), T3V1 (Palam Vichitra X Azotobacter @ 2 %), T0V1 (Palam Vichitra X Control), T1V1 (Palam Vichitra X Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria @ 2% + Azotobacter @ 2 %), T0V1 (Palam Kanchan X Phosphate solubilizing bacteria @ 2 %), T3V2 (Palam Kanchan X Azotobacter @ 2 %), T0V2 (Palam Kanchan X Control). The experiment reveals that among all treatments like growth, quality and yield parameters T1 showed the best result for V1 and in V2, T3 showed the best result for almost all the parameters. Floral bud initiation was early when treated with T1 in both the varieties, i.e., V1 (63 DAT) and V2 (63.67 DAT). Days to harvest were the same for all the treatments in V1 (90 DAT) and in V2, T1 (90 DAT) took the least amount of time for harvesting. It can be concluded that, combination of Azotobacter @ 2 % with other organic amendments and treatment T1 give higher yield and better quality of broccoli.
In recent years, various extensive and case studies have imparted knowledge in highlighting the substance of organic farming and the multitude of its benefits. Although a significant difference may be minimal between conventional and organic practices of farming, recent findings implicate the injudicious use of synthetics in the field of conventional farming. Many of the chemically created, man-made pesticides and herbicides have proved to have unfold number of side effects on our human health as we Consume produce which could have residues of the chemicals used during the course of production. Apart from this, recent innovations and technologies have created cultivation practices which have diverged or nullified the age old, traditional practices of growing food and plantation crops in recent times; it will not be long till a time comes when technology takes control of the farming dynasty. For this very reason, it is essential for us to give paramount attention to the sustainability of organic farming practices which will not only improve the safety of produce but also help us remember the traditional farming practices and carry on its legacy throughout the years and generations to come. This paper culminates the organic scenario of the state of Sikkim, focusing particularly on horticultural crops and its area and production.
