Background: Foreign body in the airways is a serious event and fatal if not managed properly in time. Accident resulting from the inhalation of the foreign body continues to take formidable toll of lives every year.Objecti ve: This study was undertaken to find out the incidence of foreign bodies in air passages in this part of the country and types of foreign bodies, to establish the role of radiological investigations, and to find out the effective measures which are valuable in decreasing the post endoscopic complications and morbidity. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in all suspected cases of foreign body in the air passages attending as well as referred to the Department of Otolaryngology of a Medical College of Rajasthan from January 2014 to December 2015. In each case, a procedure like direct laryngoscopy or bronchoscopy was done depending on the site of the foreign body. Results: Out of 100 cases, 58 were males and 42 were females. 88% of the patients were children below the age of 12 years. The most common foreign body extracted was betel nut in 47% of the cases. Commonest sign observed was decreased air entry in the lung (83%). Commonest radiological finding was obstructive collapse (37%). 48% of the total foreign bodies were present in right bronchus while 32% were lodged in the left bronchus and 3% at the carina. Conclusion: A diagnostic bronchoscopy should always be done in refractory cases of chronic respiratory infection, allergy or pneumonia. A negative radiological examination does not exclude a foreign body.
<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Diphtheria is an acute infectious preventable disease of childhood caused by <em>C</em>. <em>diphtheriae</em>. Diphtheria is a localized infection of mucous membrane or skin.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> The present study was carried out in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology S.P. Medical College and associated group of hospital. In this study all cases of diphtheria and all age groups which attended ENT OPD and emergency department during period from 1/1/2010 to 31/12/2010 were included. </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> In the present study highest numbers of cases were recorded among 5-10 years of age followed by 0-5 year of age group. 57.59% patients were male and 42.41% patients were female. It was found that occurrence of diphtheria was highest in month November and October and was quit frequent during September and December. No cases during April, June and July. It was observed that most common post diphtheria complication was myocarditis (23.42%) followed by neurological complication.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> In order to prevent complication of the disease active immunization is customary and in order to detect the disease at early stage and for prompt treatment masses should be educated regarding the dreadful nature of the disease.</p>
<p class="abstract">Parapharyngeal space tumors represent only 0.5% of all head and neck tumors. Out of which, 80% are benign and 20% are malignant. Tumor must be at least 2 cm in size before bulge or abnormality is palpable. We report a case of 8 year old female child who presented with bulge in right tonsillar region. </p>
<p class="abstract">Antrochoanal polyp or Killian polyp is a benign, solitary lesion that affects mainly children and young adults. It is usually unilateral in occurrence without bony erosion. We report a unilateral antrochoanal polyp of left side, in 45 year old female, extending into nasopharynx, right sided nasal cavity, protruding out through left nostril and causing bony erosion of medial wall of maxilla on left side.</p>
