This paper presents a new strategy for tuning PID controllers based on a fractional reference model. The model is represented as an ideal closed-loop system whose open-loop is given by the Bode's ideal transfer function. The PID controller parameters are determined by the minimization of the integral square error (ISE) between the time responses of the desired fractional reference model and of the system with the PID controller. The resulting closed-loop system (with the PID controller) has the desirable feature of being robust to gain variations with step responses exhibiting an iso-damping property. Several examples are presented that demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the proposed methodology.
In this paper we propose the use of the least-squares based methods for obtaining digital rational approximations (IIR filters) to fractional-order integrators and differentiators of type s a , a R. Adoption of the Pade´, Prony and Shanks techniques is suggested. These techniques are usually applied in the signal modeling of deterministic signals. These methods yield suboptimal solutions to the problem which only requires finding the solution of a set of linear equations. The results reveal that the least-squares approach gives similar or superior approximations in comparison with other widely used methods. Their effectiveness is illustrated, both in the time and frequency domains, as well in the fractional differintegration of some standard time domain functions.

Fractional Calculus (FC) goes back to the beginning of the theory of differential calculus. Nevertheless, the application of FC just emerged in the last two decades, due to the progress in the area of chaos that revealed subtle relationships with the FC concepts. In the field of dynamical systems theory some work has been carried out but the proposed models and algorithms are still in a preliminary stage of establishment. Having these ideas in mind, the paper discusses FC in the study of system dynamics and control. In this perspective, this paper investigates the use of FC in the fields of controller tuning, legged robots, redundant robots, heat diffusion, and digital circuit synthesis.
-In this paper we propose a modified version of the classical unforced Van der Pol oscillator that occurs when introducing a fractional-order time derivative in the state space equations that describes its dynamics. The resulting fractional-order Van der Pol oscillator is analyzed in the time and frequency domains, for several values of order's fractional derivative and, consequently, of the total system order. It is shown that the system can exhibit different output behavior depending on the total system order. Several numerical simulations and performance indices illustrate the fractional dynamics.
