The increasing consumption of fossil-based energy especially LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) that is not balanced with the availability of energy source, required a development of alternative energy with abundant amount and environmentally friendly. One of alternative energy source feasible to develop is the one from biomass waste that is livestock manure. Magelang becomes one of potential area in Central Jawa as biogas development. Biogas is produced by using digester anaerobically. Magelang has livestock about 142.127 with potency of gas production about 86.690 m3. The resulted biogas production equals to 43.345 kg of LPG or 14.448 of LPG 3 kg which is can fullfill the cooking needs for about 278 households in one year.
The depletion of fossil fuel reserves is increasingly encouraging people to see other renewable energy sources. Strategic steps can be taken is applying the concept of energy diversification. One of the simplest and easiest ways to diversify energy is through biomass energy utilization. Indonesia has abundant biomass energy sources, which can come from waste. Potential wastes that can be used as raw material for briquettes are sawdust and coconut shell waste. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in the adhesive concentration of starch on the characteristics of charcoal briquettes which include caloric value, moisture content, and ash content. The research is done with variating of adhesive concentration 4%, 6%, and 8% with sawdust and coconut shell composition 75%:25%. The research result shows that briquettes with 4% of adhesive concentration have caloric value 6974.022 Cal/g, moisture content 4.518%, and ash content 1.364%. Briquettes with 6% of adhesive concentration have caloric value 7561.582 Cal/g, moisture content 4.232%, and ash content 1.762%. Briquettes with 8% of adhesive concentration have caloric value 6996.102 Cal/g, moisture content 4.455%, and ash content 1.623%. The characteristics of briquette have fulfilled the value of briquette quality standard SNI 01-6235-2000. The most optimum of adhesive concentration in briquette production from the research was 6%.
Biomass is often considered as a material that is lacking or even uneconomical. Biomass that is abundantly available in Indonesia is sawdust and coconut shell waste. This number has not been used maximally, this is because both wastes tend to be disposed of directly into the environment and can cause environmental pollution. Briquetting technology is one of method which can be implemented to increase the added value by producing briquettes. Many factors affect the quality of briquettes, one of which is the pressure of the briquette press. The pressure of the briquette press affects the durability and cohesiveness of briquettes. The aim of this research was to specify the effect of compression pressure on calorific value, ash content, and water content of briquettes. The research was conducted by varying the briquetting compression pressure, namely 1500 psi, 2000 psi, and 3000 psi. It has been done by several main stages, namely the carbonization process, the manufacture of charcoal briquettes, and test analysis. Charcoal briquettes have an average heating value of 6386.377 cal/g, 1.136% moisture content, and 6.659% ash content at a compression pressure of 1500 psi. At a compression pressure of 2000 psi, charcoal briquettes have an average heating value of 6672.601 cal/g, 1.110% moisture content, and 5.419% ash content. Meanwhile, at the compression pressure of 3000 psi charcoal briquettes have an average heating value of 6685.144 cal/g, 1.288% water content, and 6.627% ash content. Charcoal briquettes produced by varying the pressure of the briquetting press have met the quality standard of SNI 01-6235-2000 briquettes. The most optimum compression pressure for charcoal briquetting obtained in this study was 2000 psi.
