This study tested the hypothesis that, analogous to married individuals, college students in committed romantic relationships experience greater well‐being than single college students. In a sample of 1,621 college students, individuals in committed relationships experienced fewer mental health problems and were less likely to be overweight/obese. There were no significant differences between groups in frequency of physical health problems. Examination of 2 models suggested that being in a committed romantic relationship decreases problematic outcomes largely through a reduction in sexual partners, which in turn decreases both risky behaviors and problematic outcomes. These results are discussed in the context of how premarital dating relationships may contribute to understanding of the observed association between marriage and well‐being.
The current study investigated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS). The Turkish version of the HFS, the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were administered to 796 Turkish university students (430 women, 366 men) with a mean age of 20.6 yr. (SD = 2.1). Internal consistency reliability was calculated and Cronbach alpha coefficients ranged between .71 and .82. Criterion validity (Pearson correlation) between the HFS and other scales ranged from -.09 to .34. Additionally, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess the fit of the standard three-factor solution of the HFS. The results suggested that the Turkish version of the HFS had adequate internal consistency, criterion validity, and reflected the standard three-factor structure, indicating that it can be reliably used to measure forgiveness among a Turkish sample.
Relationship dissolution now occurs through technologies like text messaging, e-mail, and social networking sites (SNS). Individuals who experience relationship dissolution via technology may differ in their attachment pattern and gender role attitudes from those who have not had that experience. One hundred five college students (males=21 and females=84) completed an online questionnaire about technology-mediated breakups, attachment style, and gender role attitudes. More than a quarter of the sample had experienced relationship dissolution via technology. Attachment anxiety predicted those subject to technology-mediated breakups. Attachment avoidance and less traditional gender roles were associated with increased likelihood of technology use in relationship dissolution. Implications are discussed in regards to future research and practice.
