The stochastic oscillator is one of the popular tools used by technical analysts. The tools are used mainly to find the overbought and oversold position in the stock market. The stochastic values are between 0-100 which helps to determine the market scenario. The two stochastic indicators are comprised of two lines namely; %K and %D. The investors using the short-term moving average follows %K and for long-term moving average for %D. Though, both are used for buy signal or sell signal by the investors. The basic concept is if, the value of %K is seen above %D, which reflects to sell position, which in context to Nepalese stock market, the scenario is seen during the month of June-July of every fiscal year. At the same time, momentum uses transaction signal or trade signal or the zero ‘0’ line to find the bearish or bullish trend of the market. The momentum of NEPSE index clearly pictures out the bullish and the bearish trend for a specific duration. If the momentum line touches the ‘zero line’, the NEPSE has changed its trend.
Nepal Stock Exchange Limited (NEPSE) is only a secondary market in Nepal. After almost three decades of its establishment, the NEPSE trading system turned fully automated on January 17, 2021. The new system is named NEPSE Online Trading System (NOTS), which was launched on November 6, 2018. After the breakout of the COVID-19, the NOTS users using NEPSE online Trade Management System (TMS) and Uniform Resource Locator (URL) increased due to the nation-wide lockdown as well as the compulsion from the governing body. Hence, the paper attempts to get opinions from the NOTS users about its features and performance. The paper has taken 300 NOTS users as samples for the survey purpose. The online survey was conducted for the study. A 5–points Likert scale-based questionnaire was forwarded to the potential online traders (investors) through an online platform such as messenger and email. The study has followed descriptive statistics and a one-sample t-test to interpret the collected data from the NOTS users. The study found that there is an issue of the market data display in the NOTS platform, which needs to be addressed as soon as possible. At the same time, the respondents stated that the best parts of NOTS were that it has helped them to specify and customize the securities, price, and volume that one would like to trade on a real-time basis.
This paper has attempted to find the interest of Nepalese investors, brokers and depository participants on the use the technical tools for the analysis of the stock market. The use of technical analysis in context to Nepal shows that the participants in the Nepalese stock market are highly interested on the use of new Hi-Lo price while making their investment decisions. Another interest was seen for trade volume indicators. The Nepalese stock market participants are not seen interested in using the resistance and support level followed by the pattern i.e. candlestick charts while analyzing the stock market trend.
There are two types of analysis done for a stock market. One is fundamental analysis, where an investor looks at an intrinsic value of the stock, and another is technical analysis, where investors determine the future trend of the market looking at the current pattern or trend of the market. This paper is focused on one of the technical analysis tools, i.e., Moving Average Convergence-Divergence. It is a tool based on the three exponential moving average (9-12-26 EMA Rule). The MACD analysis, with the help of a single line, was helpful to find out the exact bullish and the bearish trend of the Nepse. A signal line is a benchmark to determine the stock market moving either to a bullish or bearish trend. It can help an investor, where the market is going in a direction. A market convergence, divergence, and crossover were better identified with the help of the MACD histogram. The paper found that the Nepse return was stable for a very minimal period from 1998-99 to 2019-20. The shift from the bullish to bearish or vice-verse were seen easily identified with the help of a MACD histogram. Finally, a better-combined knowledge of moving average and candlestick chart analysis will help an investor, to put a clear picture of a market trend with the help of MACD analysis.
