This research is one of the recipients of Research Grants for Beginner Lecturers (Hibah Penelitian Dosen Pemula) organized by Kemenristek Dikti with the year of implementation of 2017. This study aims to: (1) examine the influence of P.O.W.E.R. learning on the effectiveness of students' learning; and (2) analyze students' writing skills after applying the P.O.W.E.R strategy learning. It is a qualitative descriptive research where the primary data analyzed is the development of student writing before, during, and after the implementation of P.O.W.E.R. Learning. In addition, as secondary data, the analysis of questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations were tabulated as supporting primary data. Participants selected by using Purposive Participant technique. A total of 80 regular students of the 2016 English Study Program at STKIP Siliwangi were involved. The results of the study showed an increase in students writing skill form before the implementation, during, and after the implementation of P.O.W.E.R. Learning. Based on questionnaire and observation, student also responses positively to the lessons learned. This implies that the students were motivated by the learning process. Thus it can be concluded that P.O.W.E.R. Learning affects the effectiveness of students learning through the realization of learning styles as well as increased learning motivation.
The purpose of English language education is to provide students with the capabilities to understand the language in appropriate way and to have good ability in written and oral (Richard, 2008). If students are not able to speak English fluently and clearly, this purpose will be hard to achieve. So, it is essential to study this phenomenon in order to discover if students actually have problems with speaking, and then we can recognize what kind of problems and the reason of it also their perception in Speaking English as a foreign language in Indonesia. This study employed qualitative research paradigm as an intensive, holistic description, and analysis of a single instance, phenomenon, or social unit (Alwasilah, 2011). The study employed a descriptive method with multi instruments as observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Populations of this research were taken from a class of last semester students at STKIP Siliwangi Bandung and the sample were taken from four high achievers and four low achievers from the classroom. The result showed that students’ behavior lead them to speaking difficulties, those who are not interested in speaking activity, relatively get trouble in speaking for academic purposes. This study showed that students who experience difficulties with speaking often have problems with their motivation and self-confidence so that they feel quite hard to recognize their true skill. Somehow, many students have positive attitude and perception toward the concept of fluency in speaking English. They consider that fluency in speaking is something important to master; they think it will be very useful for their carrier in the future. Keywords : Speaking English, Difficulties
Pragmatics is study of significance aspects and language use which are dependent to the speaker, the addressee and other characteristics about the context of utterance. Along with communication, we are as humans do it as speakers who deliver utterance or anything to the addressee. Therefore communication and language are related to another one with pragmatics. Usually people utilize language in spoken and written, for instance conversation writing ideas, thoughts and so on in the book. For example cerebration contained in fairy tale stories were poured through the writer that one may be understood by readers. These ideas are expressed in the form about speech acts as described in Yule's theory in his book Pragmatics: Speech Act Classification (1996), there are five classifications of speech act pragmatically that can be proposed with a speaker such as representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. The researchers used Beauty and the Beast short story to be analyzed classification about speech act. The method used in this analysis is a descriptive qualitative method. The results in this study, there are 10 speech act in short story Beauty and the Beast. In the outcomes of this study, that speech act classified into 4 types. Speech act classification is mostly Directives (50%); Representatives (30%); Declarations (10%); and Commissives (10%). The classification type unfound in the story above is Expressives.
There is a positive correlation between students academic reading skills and their writing skill (Inayah, 2010). This researchexplored students difficulties in comprehending reading for academic materials used in their classroom. This research usedcase study as an intensive, holistic description, and analysis of a single instance, phenomenon, or social unit (Silverman, 2005). The study employed a descriptive method with multi instruments as observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Populations of this research were taken from a class of reading for academic purposesstudents at STKIP Siliwangi Bandung and the sample were taken from two high achievers and two low achievers from the classroom. The result showed that students' behavior lead them to reading difficulty, those who are not interested reading activity, relatively get trouble in reading for academic purposes. This study showed that students who experience difficulty with reading often develop problems with motivation and self confidence. Individuals with reading problems are more likely to attribute failure to a lack of personal ability or intelligence so that they cannot recognize their true skill.
This study aims to investigate the motivation of senior high school students at 11 st grade in reading and writing English texts, especially narrative text. The study also explores the insight toward the use of mind mapping and cooperative integrated reading and writing in nurturing students' interest and motivation in writing narrative text. The study used qualitative case study to learn and pay attention to phenomena that the students' motivation in reading and writing narrative text are needed to be nurtured. There were 36 students of 11 st grade in senior high school in Bandung were involved in this study. Questionnaire and interview were given to the students. The results show that the students who show positive view toward reading and writing narrative texts are 74% students. They interest and willingness in making mind mapping of the narrative, because they know that narratives texts are full of information and moral value. While only 26% students who seem force to read and write narratives text to compose mind mapping. Eventually, integrating reading and composition in the classroom can nurture their reading interest and increase their willingness to read narrative text. Since, many students can understand the moral value of the narrative text through discussing with their friends at the class and making a mind mapping through cooperative learning about the narrative text is very useful to develop their mind.
