This paper examines three intrinsic underlying variables affecting the provision of rural electricity services: household income, household location and a country's relative wealth in terms of per capita income. A cross section of nationally representative household surveys from sixteen Latin American countries provides a recent snapshot of access to electricity in the region. This examination shows that despite recent progress in rural electrification, lowincome countries still face significant challenges. Rural electricity coverage is as low as 55% for the poorest income group in some LAC countries, while around 90% of the total access gap is concentrated among the poorest households living in rural areas of low-income countries. Location explains most of the lack of access, however in low-income countries, income is also a key barrier to electrification. These patterns translate into a sizeable barrier to electricity access that mainly affects poor households in poor countries, emphasizing the need for effective rural electrification programs to promote inclusive economic growth and social wellbeing.JEL codes: O18, O55, Q01, Q41
El artículo presenta los resultados de la investigación que se adelantó durante la campaña a la Alcaldía Mayor de Bogotá, Colombia, del año 2011. En el análisis se observó la agenda temática de los medios informativos y las fuentes de información periodística utilizadas en la construcción de las piezas políticas emitidas en tres emisoras de radio (RCN Radio, CARACOL y La W) monitoriadas durante la emisión de sus noticieros de la mañana de lunes a viernes, excluyendo los días festivos. Los géneros del periodismo que se destacan en el estudio son la entrevista y la noticia. El tema "proceso electoral" capturó la atención de los medios monitoreados. Se subraya que lo que más debatieron los candidatos durante las candidaturas fue el tema de avales o alianzas entre partidos políticos y campañas. Se reitera el unifuentismo o, peor aún, la carencia de fuentes periodísticas en las cápsulas emitidas.The article presents the research results that were carried out during the campaign for mayor of Bogota in Colombia in 2011. Observed in the analysis were the thematic agenda of the media and the sources that journalists used in the creation of the journalistic pieces broadcast on three radio stations (RCN Radio, CARACOL and La W) monitored during their morning newscasts Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Journalistic genres highlighted in the study are interviews and news. The electoral process subject caught the attention of the media examined.
