SUMMARY: This paper comprises the decapod crustacean material collected during the "Victor Hensen" campaign 1994 and during the last phase of "Polarstern" cruise ANT XIII/4 in 1996. Sampling covered waters of medium and greater depth in the Straits of Magellan, the channels towards the south, and the area south of the Beagle Channel including the northern slope of the Drake Passage. 30 species of decapods were found, which is considered a good result taking into account that the species restricted to the intertidal and the upper subtidal, which were not subject of this study, are missing. Anomurans were the dominant group, followed by brachyurans and caridean shrimps. Additionally one palinuran (Stereomastis suhmi; n=8) and a single specimen of the astacuran Thymops birsteini were found. Dominance patterns changed considerably from the Straits of Magellan to the channel system south of the Strait, and again to the area south of the Beagle and the northern slope of the Drake Passage. Among the top dominants were the galatheid Munida spp., which in the southernmost area numerically contributes >90% to the catches, the brachyuran crabs Peltarion spinosulum and Eurypodius latreillii, the hermit crab Pagurus comptus, and the caridean shrimps Austropandalus grayi and Pasiphaea acutifrons. Munida spp. and P. spinosulum also revealed the highest frequency of occurrence at 49% and 45% of the stations, respectively, followed by E. latreillii, P. comptus, and A. grayi. Regional and bathymetric distribution of the principal species are given. The depth range of some species was found to be very wide (Campylonotus semistriatus, Munida spp., E. latreillii, P. spinosulum) whereas others were restricted to relatively shallow waters (Pagurus gaudichaudii, Lithodes santolla, Campylonotus vagans, A. grayi) or great depth (Nematocarcinus lanceopes, Stereomastis suhmi). It should be mentioned, however, that sampling depths differed greatly in the areas of study. Contrary to the Antarctic, the Magellan region reveals a strong dominance of reptant decapods whereas caridean shrimps play a minor role in that region. This dominance pattern is valid even for the southernmost areas of the region. The northern slope of the Drake Passage is characterized by a mixture of cold-temperate and Antarctic elements which make it a transitional area between the two continents.Key words: Decapoda, species composition, distribution, abundance, Straits of Magellan, Beagle Channel, Drake Passage RESUMEN: COMPOSICIÓN DE ESPECIES Y DISTRIBUCIÓN DE LOS CRUSTÁCEOS DECÁPODOS EN LAS AGUAS DE LA PATAGONIA Y DETIERRA DEL FUEGO, AMÉRICA DEL SUR. SUMMARY: The decapod crustaceans Eurypodius latreillii (Brachyura) and Pagurus comptus (Paguridae) were the most frequently occurring species in Agassiz trawl (AGT) samples obtained during the Chilean -German -Italian "Victor Hensen" Expedition in the Straits of Magellan and south of the Beagle Channel. Sex composition and length structure aspects were studied using the material from 15 stations in the two areas, which comprised 773 specimens of E. latreillii and 647 P. comptus. The size frequency of both species was characterized by the presence of small individuals in shallow waters. The sex composition varied with depth, indicating a dominance of E. latreillii females in deep waters, whereas no such pattern was observed in P. comptus. These differences may be caused by epizoites of E. latreillii and the availability of vacant gastropod shells for P. comptus, in addition to geographical aspects and life-cycle patterns of these species.
Gifts are a regular practice within the relationships established by business world stakeholders with the professionals that may be instrumental in promoting their sales. Consequently, gifts are a potential source of conflicts of interest. This article is the result of a bibliographic study of papers addressing gifts, published in scientific journals which was carried out with the aim of identifying what kinds of professions address the issue and in what ways, in order to reach conclusions that may enhance reflection and contribute to professional training. The research was carried out using the SciELO, PsychNet, IEEE, and Proquest databases and yielded 59 publications that span the period between 1998 and 2015. Results show a remarkable concentration in health-related professions, mainly in their relationships with the pharmaceutical industry. Nevertheless, an emerging presence is being observed in other professional fields. Starting from a philosophical conceptualization of the gift as a present, the results suggest that it is not this conception of gift but rather the exchange rationality that is reflected in these practices, thus becoming an ethically gray, i.e., uncertain area, that cannot be disregarded when it comes to training in professional ethics. Key words: gift, conflict of interest, professions, pharmaceutical industry Los regalos como conflicto de interés: ¿Una zona gris? SUMMARY: Egg production and reproductive investment were studied in the spider crab Eurypodius latreillii from the Straits of Magellan, southern Chile. A total of 66 ovigerous females were analyzed, ranging in size from 29.0 to 62.9 mm carapace length. E. latreillii produced up to 15886 embryos, and clutch size increased with maternal size. Initial egg size was large (0.162 mm 3 ), and the embryo volume increase during the incubation period was 32 %. Brood mortality was substantial (83 %), and since egg volume increase could not compensate for the egg loss, average egg mass volume decreased considerably during embryogenesis. The average brood mass at laying accounted for 13 % of the maternal body mass (on a wet mass basis), and this value coincides with previous findings concerning energy allocation for egg production in other brachyuran crabs. In general, our data regarding E. latreillii correspond well with those from spider crab species inhabiting the northern hemisphere. The large egg size of E. latreillii compared with majids from other geographical regions may be an indication of a latitudinal gradient in the reproductive biology of majid crabs. Future studies with spider crabs from the southern hemisphere are desirable to substantiate this assumption.Key words: egg production; energy allocation; brood mortality; southern hemisphere, Majidae.
