Imatinib mesylate is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in the treatment of a variety of oncological conditions. It has been associated with a spectrum of pigmentary cutaneous side effects. Despite the well‐known association of eruptive melanocytic nevi with the use of other tyrosine kinase inhibitors, this phenomenon has not been linked to the administration of imatinib. We present the first case of imatinib‐induced eruptive nevi in an 18‐year‐old patient with acute lymphocytic leukaemia in remission.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was the third leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for one in eight deaths, between March 2020 and October 2021. 1 Older age, defined by the United Nations as above 60 years old, was associated with severe COVID-19 illness and increased mortality. 1,2 Independently, ethnic, and racial minorities, were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Compared to White non-Hispanics, African Americans and Hispanic/ LatinX individuals were more likely to contract the virus, be hospitalised, and die from COVID-19. 2,3 Given this scenario, we conducted a non-systematic PubMed literature search and reflected on the challenges and potential solutions to help meet the postpandemic needs of these populations.
Purpose This study aims to review the presentation of substance use disorders in older adults, how addiction intertwines with neurocognitive disorders and how to approach this vulnerable population. Design/methodology/approach Electronic data searches of PubMed, Medline and the Cochrane Library (years 2000–2021) were performed using the keywords “neurocognitive,” “dementia,” “substance use,” “addiction,” “older adults” and “elderly.” The authors, in consensus, selected pivotal studies and conducted a narrative synthesis of the findings. Findings Research about substance use disorders in older adults is limited, especially in those with superimposed neurocognitive disorders. Having dual diagnoses can make the identification and treatment of either condition challenging. Management should use a holistic multidisciplinary approach that involves medical professionals and caregivers. Originality/value This review highlights some of the intertwining aspects between substance use disorders and neurocognitive disorders in older adults. It provides a comprehensive summary of the available evidence on treatment in this population.
Children with genodermatoses are at an increased risk of developing behavioural disorders which may impart lasting damage on the individual and their family members. As such, early recognition of childhood mental health disorders via meticulous history taking, thorough physical examination, and disorder-specific testing is of paramount importance for timely and effective intervention. If carried out properly, prompt psychiatric screening and intervention can effectively mitigate, prevent or even reverse, the psychiatric sequela in question. To that end, this review aims to inform the concerned physician of the manifestations and treatment strategies relevant to the psychological sequelae of genodermatoses.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
