English has been the medium of instruction since the beginning of the 20th century in thePhilippines during the arrival of the Americans. This has been incorporated holistically in the society through the educational system, communication, mass media, publications and social media. It is given therefore that Filipino learners are bilingual--i.e., speaking both Filipino (the native tongue) and English as Second Language (ESL). After a century though, proficiency in the language is still a difficulty and an anxiety, especially from public school learners. In Taytay Senior High School (a public senior high school), Grade 11 students were observed of certain levels of difficulties in reading, writing, speaking and listening. In this study, the researchers probed deeper into the following: a.) the difficulties experienced by grade 11 students b.) the factors that led to such difficulties and c.) the articulated ways to help them overcome such difficulties in English proficiency. As a descriptive study, the researchers used pre-survey, survey, FGD and extensive literature review as methodologies. The survey results revealed problematic stages on vocabulary, training and knowledge, confidence and self-esteem and interest. Articulated in the FGD furthermore were issues of generation, practice/articulation, and system as factors that led to difficulties in reading writing, speaking and listening. On the other hand, Grade 11 students underscored power of mind, the use of native language and practice as methodical solutions to the problem. Further directions of this study could include elaboration of the FGD results that pertain to issues of generation, practice/articulation and system. The use of native language could also be expounded on future studies.
Students' misbehavior in the classroom is a common scenario. In some researches, students' misbehavior is associated with social skill deficiency resulting in behavior problems and poor academic achievement. This study is timely and vital in addressing the need for a program that will reinforce positive discipline in the classroom. The Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP) of Benjamin B. Esguerra Memorial National High School (BBEMNHS) maintains that the intervention program with the goal to Change, Reinvent, and Elevate Attitude Towards Excellence (CREATE) of students that are at risk is essential to lessen if not eradicate misbehavior in the classroom. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were utilized, particularly pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design and phenomenographical analysis. Survey questionnaire, anecdotal records, and focus group interviews were used for data gathering. This research was anchored on the inculcation approach of set absolute values processed according to social skills processing of change: seeing, thinking, and doing. The common classroom misbehaviors such as not submitting projects/homework, cutting classes, absenteeism, and violating school rules were garnered from the respondents. Interactive games are found to be the most effective among the enabling activities. Lectures are perceived to be the least effective. Pre-test and post-test of the respondents' social skills have significant difference, while, students' conceptions on the effect of the CREATE program generate a binary opposite effect such as acceptance vs. denial, resolve vs. status quo, and applying vs. defying. Further studies in gender and grade level implementation of the program may be undertaken using this baseline research.
This study finds out the relationship between work performance and job satisfaction among teachers of junior high schools in Philippines. They were well aware of the facts of their job satisfaction, e.g., school policies, supervision methods, pay and other benefits, relationships between faculty and students, further growth and promotions, workplace conditions, achievement and recognition, and responsibility and accountability. It was concluded that teachers’ job satisfaction could produce an effectiveness and sustainability in educational institutions. Using a descriptive method, a non-probability convenience sampling was employed for 70 public school teachers. Two existing validated questionnaires were used: the Three-Component Model Employee Commitment Survey, to surface the level of work commitment of teachers in an organisation; and Job Satisfaction Survey, to evaluate the teachers’ overall job satisfaction. Findings show a significant relationship between work commitment and job satisfaction, specifically in terms of position and educational level. In addition, teachers are satisfied with the people within the organisation; however, it also shows that teachers are not satisfied with too much paper work. It is recommended that teachers should consider the teaching job as a profession and as a vocation. Keywords: High schools in Philippines, job satisfaction, descriptive method, work commitment.
