This paper proposed a ship handling simulator using actual training ship for third grade pilot trainees. The ship handling simulator was achieved by developing the control system which reproduced a large vessel's maneuverability on the actual training ship. Moreover, visual system that gave scenery from large vessel's bridge for trainees by using Augmented Reality was developed. In order to evaluate the influence of the developed system on trainees, trainee's mental workload when the system was used was measured at the actual ship experiment. The experimental result showed that developed system derives trainee's high motivation for maneuvering training.
