Formalised postgraduate writing support centres are a relatively new phenomenon at the majority of South African universities and have not yet been researched intensively. This article, which forms part of a mandated study, presents the findings of research into the nature of postgraduate writing support at a number of South African universities. In 2014, an external review into the throughput rate of undergraduate and postgraduate students at a particular South African residential university was conducted, which concluded that there was a need for more support for postgraduate students who were conducting research. (University X, 2014). Accordingly, a questionnaire was distributed to writing centres at various institutions across the country. This article describes practices relating to staffing, the availability of resources, as well as the positioning of postgraduate writing support within or separate to undergraduate writing centres. Additionally, findings are presented in terms of the different modes of delivery and the related research outputs. While this article provides an overview of current best practice at a number of university-based postgraduate writing centres, suggestions are also made concerning an ideal model for the foundation of such a writing centre at a large residential university.
An analysis of the bodily spatial power relations in Agaat by Marlene van NiekerkThe aim of this article is to explore the power relations portrayed through the bodily spatial interaction of the characters of Milla and Agaat in Marlene van Niekerk's 2004 novel, Agaat. This interaction is analysed according to the theory of Thirding-asOthering posited by Henri Lefebvre and Edward Soja in terms of the body in space. The body in space is interpreted through agency which is exemplified in the intimacy of the relations of these two bodies through the actions of bathing, giving birth, and the physical aspects of the process of "civilising" the child character of Agaat. Through an analysis of three sets of incidents and scenes which illustrate the physical inhabitation of space through agency, the power relations between Milla and Agaat are exemplified and discussed. The analysis culminates in the conclusion that the relationship between Milla and Agaat is a cyclical power play that does not come to any pure form of dominance or submission because of the inhabitation that they enact through each other. With agency being tantamount to inhabitation and assertion of power, Agaat has the ultimate power on the farm through Milla, as Milla's body is othered by her illness and finally her death.

Hy voltooi tans 'n doktorale ondersoek in vergelykende letterkunde onder leiding van Andries Visagie aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch. He is currently completing a doctoral study in comparative literature under the super vision of Andries Visagie at Stellenbosch Uni versity. Reinhardt FourieIn 2013 het ek op uitnodiging van LitNet Akademies 'n kort essay gelewer oor die stand van omgewingsgerigte literêre studies in Suid-Afrika (sien Fourie 2013). Hierin het ek kortliks toegelig hoe die ekokritiek as ondersoekrigting sedert 2007 al hoe meer bepalend begin word het in die (Suid-)Afrikaanse literatuurstudie. In teenstelling met ander rigtings het ekokritiek sedert sy ontstaan en tot op daardie stadium (2013) taamlik heterogeen gebly. Enersyds is dié eienskap gesien as tot die voordeel van die ontwikkeling van die veld. Andersyds het dit beteken dat ekokritiek beskou kon word as teoreties onderontwikkel.Ek het daarom indertyd twee vereistes geïdentifiseer waaraan ekokritiek myns insiens sou moes voldoen indien dit in die toekoms as 'n volwaardige ondersoekrigting geken wou word:Ten eerste moet ekokritiek beter gedefinieer word binne die verskillende dissiplines en met plaaslike spesifisiteite in gedagte. Ondersoeke van dié aard is immers nie beperk tot die studie van letterkunde nie en moet verder reageer op Larsen (2007) se kritiek aangaande die byna eksklusief Anglo-Amerikaanse fokus van vroeë ekokritiese literatuurondersoeke. Ten tweede moet die ekokritiek op grond van sy etiese standpunte deur die grense van die akademie breek deur 'n duideliker bemoeienis met omgewingskwessies daar te stel;
