The feasibility of using aqueous surfactant micelles to Improve analytical chemiluminescence (CL) measurements was examined. Specifically, the lucigenin (Luc)-Af-methylacrldone CL system was characterized in different micellar and homogeneous media and the effects of various micellar systems upon the CL determination of biological reductants using Luc were assessed. It was found that solubility problems are obviated If the Luc CL assay is conducted In aqueous micelles. Additionally, the presence of cationic or zwltterionlc micelles Improves the sensitivity of the Luc CL assays for ascorbic acid, uric acid, glucose, and fructose by factors of 1.8-4.0. The average precision of the measurements Is ~9% In the micellar media while the accuracy Is comparable to that obtained In water alone. In a few Instances, potential problems due to mutual interference from other reductants can be eliminated via use of micelles. A brief prospective on the general applicability of mlcellar-enhanced CL In chemical analysis Is given.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
