This study focuses on analyzing and contrasting sentence pattern differences in both English and Sigulai languages. The study intends to find out the differences in sentence pattern between English and Sigulai language and how the sentence pattern of two languages are different. This current study was conducted by employing the qualitative method by using the contrastive analysis approach. Purposive sampling was used to select samples comprising two native-Simeulue students studying in Banda who speaks Sigulai. The findings show that there were contrast differences in verbal and nominal sentence patterns between English and Sigulai. Moreover, it can be concluded that Sigulai language has a non-configurational sentence pattern as many other Austronesian languages in Aceh and Indonesia in general.
This study analyzes the students’ difficulties in comprehending listening in English. The study used a quantitative method to investigate the problems faced by students in taking listening comprehension test. The data were collected by distributing the questionnaires and carrying out interview to the students. The study was carried out at an Islamic Boarding School in Aceh Besar District, Aceh Province. The findings showed that the students had limited chance to repeat the words, lack of listening length and speed, lack of contextual, culture and background knowledge, and poor grammar and vocabulary.
This study investigates the English learners’ perceptions of the application of Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy in reading comprehension class. The study used the quantitative method, employing a questionnaire to collect the data needed. The respondents of the study were 30 students majoring in English Education at a public university in Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, Indonesia. The respondents had already experienced the use of KWL strategy in the Reading Comprehension class. The findings showed that and the students’ perception of KWL strategy was generally positive that most of them felt that KWL is suitable to use to help them in their reading comprehension on English texts.
This study aims to find out reading strategies used by students at a public university in Aceh in cultivating their reading habit. Data were collected by means of questionnaire and interview. The results showed that most of the students were interested in reading and they had started it before coming to university. Family and friends had a little influence on them as they were self-motivated. The two most common reading habits that they had were having a reading schedule and making a reading list of their favorite book genres. On the other hand, none of them like to either bring books everywhere or read for others. They believed that reading has a lot of benefits, however, they did not want to force others to love reading.
