The secretion of the thyroid gland for a given individual must be maintained at a relatively constant level of production if the human organism is to remain in a state of well being. For different reasons, certain individuals are unable to maintain an adequate production of the secretion of the gland and this results in various states of disability. Variable degrees of thyroid insufficiency, the age and the rapidity of onset are factors which serve to produce so wide a range of clinical pictures that frequently the primary source is not readily apparent.
